Private land- you would definitely be good for coyote's and small game.
By my understanding of the law/ regulations, that should not be an unlawful hunting implement for small game and coyotes on state land as well. For deer, turkey, and migratory birds it is necessary to plug the magazine to 2 rounds or less (+1 in the chamber) with a shotgun. Aside from that, your shotgun should be good for those species as well. I would recommend confirming that with DEEP, as a precaution. If you want to get together and try to blast some squirrels on state land sometime, let me know. |

Very interested.... Did you not have you gun hunting license for ct. .?
So you took an online gun safety course for ny. And ct honors this? If so could you post what website you did to take the course please... I have my bow license and I can never get into a gun safety course here always full.. |

When I got my first Connecticut hunting license, I had already been hunting in Vermont for a couple of years. I had no problem obtaining a CT license with my Vermont Hunter Ed/ Firearm safety certificate. |

Online portion costs $25 and takes some time but definitely better than having to commit to a second full day. I ended up calling NY DEEP and got on the list for a personal call when an "online course" 1 day in person class opened up. Will probably look to do the bow course next. ETA - Somewhat expensive as non NYer but you can get a black bear tag for a NY hunt with centerfire rifle on NY state land. Tempted to get my very own bear skin rug. ETA - Online portion for NY Bow class - http://www.bowhunter-ed.com/newyork/ |

Interestingly, the 2+1 restriction for private land shotgun hunters has been removed. Also regarding private land "There is no minimum acreage requirement for using shotgun, muzzleloader, or archery equipment." - CT DEEP 2013 Hunting & Trapping. Seems a home owner can take a deer with shotgun in his backyard as long as 500ft away from any buildings not owned by him. 500ft restriction does not apply to Bow. |

The other issue is that you need to avoid shooting in the direction of roads or buildings- which is obviously straightforward, but can be a challenge, particularly in some public land parcels where seemingly random development exists. That poses the same problem with the 500' rule in some of those places. |

Can someone point me to the restriction on Suppressor use when hunting in CT? ... never mind... confirmed a no go
ETA: Separately, just got confirmation by email from CT DEEP that the SBS is legal for hunting use! ETA: Hunting license allows carry of blades 4" or more but only while hunting or on way to or from hunt? Too bad pistol permit does not immediately superseded knife law. |

My contribution
Saw in an earlier post that crossbows are now legal for all archery hunting in CT. Last year it was only good for the "special" extended January Fairfield (New Haven also I think) County deer archery season on private land. Good news for the bad bow shooters out there like myself.

On State land I believe you are limited to .22 cal smaller diameter rimfire (If not using ML or SG). Is 22WMR recommended for Coyote, Fox, Raccoon?
Separately, what kind of 12ga shot is recommended for that type of game? Are slugs allowed on game other than deer? ETA: Alexander Arms .17 HMR option for State Land |
| Private land you are good to go for the 6.8 and deer as this is what i'll be using tomorrow. The new law notes you can only posses the standard 25rd magazine at shooting ranges and your own private property so you may not want to use it hunting. There are plenty of 5 and 10rd mags out there which is easier to hunt with anyhow. |

i took a few days off from work to sit out in a tree. Opening day and im in stafford in a stand at 0615. 1520 comes around and i hear a crash behind me at about 5 0'clock. turning slowly i see a BIG spike horn about 60 yards out. This thing should be a 6 pointer at least body wise he looks like a big box. i turn in my stand and just watch waiting for a shot. neadless to say the shot never happened... too much debris between me and the deer before he took off.
Heard one in the brush before light, that was it for today.. tomorrow is a new day anyone have any luck so far?? |

^^ Slugs for deer only or fine for other game / coyote? On state land, you are limited to #2 shot or smaller for everything except deer, which requires slug, or waterfowl which is non-tox (BB or smaller). On private land, you can shoot small game and coyotes with slugs and buckshot if you want. (The shot size specifications for turkey and waterfowl apply on private land too). |

Winds as hell & cold this am.
Heard a few shots this am but nothing in my area. Relocated to along the border of the property. Maybe I will have some luck in the pm. Edit: I saw nothing, finally got a text message from my buddy I was hunting with: Saw 3 deer: one was before 1st light, 2nd was a large buck that came up fast & fled the same, the 3rd was a small spike that followed him back to his truck! |

I'm going out tomorrow morning, private land, and hoping for the best. I went out Thursday and all I saw were 3 people who ame across the property line (no guns) "in search of a deer they shot earlier that ran this way"
I scared the shit out of one of them, he got about 15 yards from my stand before I called out and said hello. They had no clue I was out there.

K not a hunter but I do the hiking wildlife monitoring thing. I usually get a good population going thru my area. But not so much this year. Very, very low acorn count. Coyotes have been rambling thru at night at an alarming rate. I was up in the back with the dog, I noticed a spot on the ground about the size of. garbage can lid, devoid of leaves and down to the dirt, but not like the dirt was dug up. I covered it back up with leaves, and a couple days later it was back. I didn't see any hoof marks, tree scrapes or deer crap, sometimes I see hair on low branches but nothing. Any other critters do this? http://i398.photobucket.com/albums/pp69/spkap/27FFA194-D8F4-439B-8D50-5683DBDFB010-2581-000005F4F9186900_zps2eb581ed.jpg ETA pic Looks like a scrape to me. Is there a small branch between 4-6 feet directly above it? If you get down there does it smell like piss? |
|
Yes that root leads to a small tree. Intact small branch, I mean real like twig small, about that high up.
Too fucking cold, and I aint kneeling to smell Marylin Monroe's piss. I went further back, saw deer tracks, and dog/coyote tracks on the same path. Small hoofs. |

I guess id need a permit off my property, as rural as it is, i got neighbors. Probably have to track them back into the woods, not sure of regs back there. I should bait the fucker and shoot him from my deck. |
