I suppose it was inevitable since every state around us has had it. I am in the camp that hunters should self-limit the taking of does and help the population a bit. I imagine the DNR might want to also limit the number of issued tags in some counties.

I checked my trail cam yesterday and all the does and yearlings look really skinny. With EHD is southern Iowa, CWD, a extremely cold winter and the drought it was a really tough year on deer.

Definitely inevitable.

Very tough year imo. Numbers are way down over the last few too. Every DNR dude we've talked to (every one who's not a major asshole anyhow) has talked about the fact that they've been petitioning for 5 years to lower numbers and almost across the board have been denied. We go down by Lake Rathbun, and the guy we talked to this past winter said actual claimed tags are down almost 60% over the last 5. Insurer's have too much money and influence, they want all the deer gone.

There's so few bucks down there anymore we've gotta take does, meat hunters.

Thank the Farm Bureau and the insurance companies for that.  ALL deer decisions are made in the governor's office.  DNR has zero control over it.  Governor for :Life Branstad sold out to the farm and insurance interests on this one.  Numbers and success rates are way down.  If memory serves there were approximately 360,000 tags this year. Harvest was just under 100,000.  28%.  We did the late rifle season down by Red Oak.  We didn't see a deer.  Nothing.  I'm giving serious consideration to giving it up.

Yep. Not into giving up yet, but its very depressing. Hell, I saw more deer on my way to work 1 day this spring than I did last hunting season. And this was in Butler County, where the only time you see deer is before you hit them on the road.

I hunt Appanoose County. I will be buying a few doe tags and either leaving them unfilled or tearing them up.  I like the meat too but I still have enough in the freezer and dont need it that bad.

I realize this will probably make a very small difference if any and I am not saying everyone should do it. If the Gov. wont listen to the DNR then it is up to hunters to help the population themselves. I dont like everything the DNR does but I do believe they have the best info on the herd and what is needed for a healthy population.

You make a good point, unfortunately for every person willing to sacrifice there'll be 99 that are not.
