I am doing research of a project at work. You folks know anything about Camp Wheeler near Macon, GA?
I understand the US Army Corps of Engineers might be doing some work there right now. |
| I understand there are still areas with unexploded shells and such. Maybe recovery and demolition? I think an area is a superfund site too. The old Navy Bomb Plant is one too. Wheeler was a WWII boot camp, my uncle did boot there in 1942, I think. He lived in Macon after the war and moved to ATL a few years ago. A lot of the original camp has been converted to industrial sites. |
| I saw the pits and some of the firing lines 10 years ago. The concrete was still in good shape on the pit wall. I heard there was a thousand yard line but the industrial area had consumed that. The range probably had at one time 100 firing points. The impact area at that time was still considered to be off limits. |
