A few friends and I are looking at going camping durring Memorial Day weekend. We live in the Saint Louis area, and are trying to find a camp site that has access to a swimming area such as a river or lake. We have previously camped out at Cuivre river state park and enjoyed that, but we looking at trying somewhere new. Thanks!

I think Johnsons Shut-ins just re-opened their state park.  It's been awhile since i've been over there, but it was a neat place to see.  And I don't think it's too far from STL.  http://www.mostateparks.com/jshutins.htm

Mark Twain looks pretty nice. About another 45 past Cuivre River.

Robertsville State Park.  A few miles down a county highway from the intersection of I-44 and US50 (Near Union, MO)  45 min max from STL.

Quiet, out of the way, on the Bourbeus (sp??) River, with a boat ramp.  Also a small pond for the youngin's to fish in.

Great idea. You can share the campground with everyone else who lives in St. Louis. They're all doing the same thing.

That said, I'd be real curious to see what they've done with Johnson Shut-ins. That would probably be my first choice. Send somebody down early to grab campsites.

Yeah, I realized that it is really late to start looking at campsites, but my friends are gung-ho on camping, so I will start calling tomorrow. Thanks for all of the suggestions.

I sent my in-laws down there to "christen" their new pop-up the first weekend they opened back up.  At the time they didn't have full facilities opened due to it not being season yet so they only stayed for a day or two.  They said it was really nice.  Which they had never been before so they had nothing to compare it to.

Even if you don't go to Johnsons Shut-ins to go camping, i'de put it on my list of things to see.  It's a really neat thing the way the water pools and flows through the rock mazes.

This is just down the road from me, and GoGop is practically a next door neighbor to the place.

I'd show up to anything held there.

Went down to Johnson's Shut-ins in late April and it really does look nice. If I hadn't known about the dam breaking I wouldn't notice any change. Parking lots are new though, and there's a new interpretive center that wasn't open yet when we visited.

The Shut-ins themselves are in full swing and not cluttered with gravel(like I expected them to be).  It looks like it will be a nice place, but it's bound to be busier than hell for a while.
