What should I know before I build / buy one and start firing golf balls off?  I haven't done much research yet but I'm wondering if there are any laws in Oregon directly related to this.

My dad and I have been eye balling a few different cannons online and are debating buying one or building one our self's.

Thanks

That's pretty cool stuff right there.  I'm checking out cannons from cannon thunder.

When I was really little my brothers and dad built a cannon out of steel pipe (about 6" in diameter and 4 feet long).  We would stuff a football into it, fill the airspace with an Oxy-acetyline blend and boom.  We could launch a football about 150 yds.

The best was a balloon because you could get a really tight seal.  It was a really big, window rayttling, car alarm setting off boom.  Usually got the cops to our house.  Never resulted in a citation.

Never tried anything heavier than a wooden projectile.  Kind of like a muzzle loader round with a terry cloth sabot.  Just did that once - it was kind of scary.

+1!

We built them out of 12" and 14" steel pipe and launched basketballs 200' in the air using powdered carbide from the welding supply. It would rattle windows for 4 blocks.

We would cut a hole in the side and weld in a spark plug, using a motorcycle battery for power, 30ft of wire and a doorbell as a remote detonator.

The cops were always called, and after we would describe how it was basically the same as the carbide cannons sold at the fireworks stands only with a 14" bore rather than 1". They would sit around and watch us fire it a few times and then go find better things to do. The neighbors must have hated us.

Hey that's a good idea.  We just have a small match hole drilled.  After this thread was posted I went over to my brother's place and the cannon is still there. Time to modify it before the 4th.

Post up some pics of your cannon.  Below is the direction I'm going to take this little project.
