Hello everyone, hope everything is going well. I have a question. What wireless company do you use? Do you travel much, if so how big is your range? Are you happy with your wireless provider? I use Cingular and travel from just south of Birmingham to Nashville and from Augusta, GA to Little Rock, AR with annual trips to Kansas and Kentucky and I am sick of Cingular's coverage. On a business trip last week I was without service 40% of the time and could see towers everywhere I went. Someone has to have a good provider. Thanks bb |
I have Cingular and I guess I've been fairly well pleased. I live in Cullman, with most of my traveling being to just N. of Bowling Green KY. I've never been without coverage on that trip nor on the trips to NC or East TN. Last month we made a trip through the country to Winter Haven Fl. The drive took us through Eufaula AL where we lost coverage to just N. of Bainbridge GA. However, the couple traveling with us never lost their coverage at all & they are also on Cingular. I turned my phone off then back on to re-register and got nothing at all for miles. On the trip back which took us through Thomasville Ga, Columbus GA, Auburn,AL to Cullman, we never lost our coverage at all. Rick |
| There is no one great wireless company that covers every area. The best you can do is pick one that covers most of the areas you travel to and has the features you want. For me, Cingular covers every area I usually travel to. Since I mainly stay around Mobile and the surrounding areas, I have never had a problem with coverage. I have been pleased with their service for the last 5 years. The only time I lose signal is between Mobile and Tuscaloosa. It's been a year since I made that drive, so the gap may have been filled in by now. If I were to go with a different company, it would be T-Mobile. For my area, they seem to have at least as good of coverage as Cingular. |

over the last 15 years i have tried them all. hands down cingular has the best coverage in alabama and everywhere i have travelled thus far. that said they also cost more. i am currently with tmobile as they have the best price, i do find a few dead areas but they are getting better and travel has not been an issue at all for me. it's worked everywhere equally well. Sprint.... wouldn't own another sprint phone if they were the only option on the planet. coverage was and still is a joke. Their customer service depart is an abomination and their billing department is a freaking joke. bellsouth... coverage on par with t-mobile, maybe just a bit better. my coworkers have reported some minor issues travelling outside the southeast USA. |
Won't be that way for long. Cingular is working on merging the 2 networks. And Cingular has gone to almost exclusively GSM rather than TDMA as their technology. Glad to see they are getting with the program (T-Mobile, and all the companies which make up all that T-Mobile bought, has been GSM for YEARS). ![]() Woody |
Like USPC40 said, BellSouth Cellular, BellSouth Mobility, whatever, no longer exists as a serving player. They merged with SBC to form Cingular. Yee ha. Woody |

many times the phone could be the problem also...esp. those 1 cent or free phones (not very good antenna reception) that the cellular phone company gives you for signing up... any one else wanna comment regarding the hardware (cell phone brand, etc) used, esp. w/ cingular as that's what I am on? |
Do you think their coverage will improve along with their merger with Nextel? FWIW, I'm stuck with Nextel as my only option - it is the only provider (I've tried phones from all of them - demos, family/friends' phones, etc.) with a consistent, reliable signal in my home and around all of our property. I've hit dead spots on long rural drives to Alex City (along Hwy. 9) and around Maplesville, but otherwise been covered well in my travels. |

My wife and I leave the speaker off and use it like a regular phone (i.e. handset to ear & mouth, not broadcasting our conversation to everyone within earshot) even when using the Direct-Connect feature, but most folks don't.
