Having trouble finding options on the net for an adjustable cheek riser that'll fit the standard synthetic stock of a REM700. I did see the hard plastic ones that require drilling holes in the stock....

http://www.snipercentral.com/karsten.htm

Is this the way to go? Any experience?

The kydex cheekpieces by both Karsten and Tac Pro are excellent. The "strap on" models by Eagle and Blackhawk will work better than nothing.

I've used the Karsten ones and can +1 that.  I've never personally tried the Tac Pro ones but have seen them and they look good.

The stock packs (like Eagle) do work and give a softer pad for your face.  However, the downside is they can allow you to have your head in a slightly different position every shot because of that soft "give" they have.  I still like them and use them on rifles.  If using these, you can fabricate spacers out of just about anything (like really dense foam), trim to fit and cinch down tight with the stock pack.  It works well for me but as they say YMMV.

l like the kydex ones...I dont mind the holes because it is for a real good reason...

I've never had an adjustable, but I do like the rear packs with dense foam as spacers.

Very comfortable, affordable, no drilling.

I added a Karsten, simple install and quality product.

rare enough in the industry to note IMHO.

For the dense foam to put under the soft cheekpieces, I've always used a military isomat.

Karsten!

I have one on my K31.

I just looked up that karsten cheek rest and I just don't get it.  it says it is a piece of 1/8" molded kydex with two bolts.  so why is it $50?

kydex can be molded with as little as a good hair dryer and a full sheet is maybe $5 (maybe higher for 1/8").  they also have about $2 worth of hardware on it.

Am I missing something?  looks like it takes about 10 min to make.

Did not realize kydex was that cheap...oh well.

Then go buy a bunch of Kydex and a hairdryer.  Setup shop and sell the same thing for $30 and make a killing.

No, seriously.

I looked at these a while back with the intent to make some up, but time constraints and getting ready to move have stopped a lot of my kydex projects.

nah!  not interested interested in setting up a shot to sell stuff, however for a few dollars of material I might try to  make one myself and use it.  And I would use my kydex press and heat gun like I have used to make my holsters, mag holders, light holders,  and knife sheaths

kydex is $8.65 from where I normally get my kydex from: http://www.knifekits.com/vcom/product_info.php?cPath=41_54_136&products_id=1188

on my SPR clone I built the cheek weld is slightly lower than I want it so I might actually make one of these and try it out.  have to order 1/8" kydex since I have never used that thick of stuff.

And there ya go.

Some people don't want to change the oil on their cars themselves or might feel like they aren't expert enough to do it right.  So, they pay someone else for their skill and labor.

so besides that are you saying there really isnt anything else I am missing? I am really asking, if there is something else in the design I am missing I would like to know.

No, buddy.  I don't think there is anything secret other than the basic Kydex ingredients and a mold that always makes the exact same perfect shape.  No other magic I can see.

I guess you don't want the guy to get paid for the labor of actually making the item.............

I've thought of making these myself in the past and selling 'em, but Karsten is a good guy who turns out a nice product.  No reason for me to step on his toes, but if you wanna take food out of his mouth go right ahead.

OK, good feedback. So I found http://karstenskydexcheekrest.com/ and was going to buy but they have 3 different models (A, B,C) and no description that I found on the differences between them. So I found this informative video and think the model A is the easiest - any experience on these?

http://customgunservicesllc.com/Kydex-Adjustable-Cheek-Rest-Model-A-Original-By-Karsten-chkrstmdla.htm

Looks like a $60 investment.

Everyone appears to be out of stock. Anyone know a store with Model A in stock?

Thanks!

I've never bought 'em from a store before, I always just ordered 'em straight from Karsten.  [email protected], always had 'em in a few days when I ordered straight from him.

I like the A model for general use.  If you're gonna be doing a lot of stalking and creeping then you might wanna go with a different model, as the knobs might snag on brush.  For the vast majority of folks, this ain't a problem.  The A model allows you to easily adjust the height without tools, which is handy when cleaning and such.

Life Lesson:

If you are going to put a cheek riser on a .50BMG rifle be very careful on your head placement. Damn near broke my jaw

Does he have a patent on them?

Competition is not steping on someone's toes.  It is capitalism.  Of that, I am a big fan.

OP, the only Place that I can think of that might stock them would be the Blankenship Custom Gun in Augusta.

The gray in color 'pipe insulator' from hardward store is another option... I'll cut it with exacto knife and superglue layers to get the proper height.

It may not be as dense as the isomat - never tried it.

well I found a 12x24 sheet of kydex on amazon for over a $1 cheaper (also twice the size) and less on shipping so I ordered me a few sheets.

I will let you know how it turns out.  I looked around the garage last night and found a couple bolts and plastic knobs that look just like the ones in the pic to use.  although I will probably run by mcmaster carr and get some lower profile knobs.  the ones on his just look too bulky.

There's already a few people knocking off his risers...here's one, doesn't look as nice and probably won't last as long...

Never had a problem with the size of the knobs on the Karsten cheekpiece.  All his hardware is parkerized.

I'm all for Capitalism and Free Enterprise.  What I'm not a big fan of is when someone who couldn't come up with the idea on their own, makes a cheap, inferior knockoff of someone else's good idea and great product, and undercuts their price.

I'm happy as hell as that a couple different companies started making AICS 10 round magazines.  AI had the monopoly for years and 2yrs ago the mags were around $98 each.  Now that Accurate Mags and Alpha Precision are making magazines that are identical in quality and craftsmanship, AI is selling theirs for under $80.

It doesn't bother me if someone makes an equal or higher quality "copy", or an improvement of an existing design, but to make a cheaper, lesser product and sell it for less is going the Chinese route.

my initial though is the longer dado bit on the drill press, although I have concerns about getting it to spin fast enough.  it is plastic so it should be ok..

that plan might change a few times between now and then.

worst case is I drill straight through on both ends and cut with the band saw.  that is what I did to make slotted brackets for the jeep and it worked fine.  just go back and clean it up, with kydex it seems that a piece of leather smooths the rough edges the best.

I will try to get this done by the HTF shoot.  are you going? if so bring your high dollar one, I would like to see it.
