Ok...sorry if this has been asked before but I was wondering how one goes about obtaining a class 3 firearm or suppressor. Is there a website that lists what you need to do, paperwork, etc.? Or is there a good dealer to go to that can help out? Any advice would be appreciated! I live in Neenah, WI if that helps at all. Ryan |

I usually go to the range in Shiocton...in their city park...think its just a $3 donation or something like that....pistol range, shotgun range, and a rifle range so it isn't that bad. I'm hoping I might be able to get the signature from the sheriff....I was working for them as a corrections officer until I was laid off last november...I don't think he will though as he wouldn't approve us to carry off duty either...not the biggest fan of his actually...haha, but it would be nice since he did lay me off...bit of a late severance package! Where do you shoot around appleton? Just curious. |
Go to your chief of police first, if you are covered by the sheriff go to that person, ask if they will sign for a NFA weapon. If yes and you pass a background check-local and FBI, then you are able to aquire it in your resident area. Do this first before anything else. Last option is forming a corporation...restrictive but viable. After a "yes" answer get the forms and then proceed. Needed- form4,compliance paper, fingerprints, and pictures, then a check to the dept of the treasury for $200.....next is waiting for transfer. Henry class 3 Green Bay |
My thoughts on it: In the end it's worth the extra paperwork and expense to form the corp. We went from a Sheriff that would sign for MGs, SBR/SBS/AOW to changing his mind and not signing for anything. He wouldn't sign for a can from the get go. Thats what I wanted at the time. Getting my first can taken care of paperwork wise was more of a pain in the ass then any of the corp purcheses have ever been. I ended up getting my sign off from the DA, about a month before he left office. The new DA won't sign. Oh and the corp transfers are faster. |

David...i'm hoping to have the new AR in a couple weeks if everything goes as planned so i'll let you know when I head up to Shiocton to break the new toy in properly! I'm gonna be starting a new job in Appleton so after training and all that fun stuff settles down i'll probably be heading up there more regularly. Photoman...what is involved with setting up a corp.? I've heard of doing this but don't really understand what it means exactly...i'm hoping to be able to get the signaatures being prior law enforcement....but thats wishful thinking. |

Hmm. Not the expert on it, but I believe you can do a LLC, if the LLC is do-able, it's like $130 a year, and you can register it online. If that doesn't work for it, the only way I know of is to have an attorney file the articles of incorporation, at least to my knowledge. We're going shooting maybe next weekend, at shiocton, saturday, you interested in coming? |

Thanks David...i'll have to look into the whole corp. thing more...got some time. I would go next sat. but I believe I will be training all damn day at my new job...hopefully things will settle down soon and i'll be able to get on my regular shift (i'll be working nights....which means more shooting!) But i'll let you know as soon as my schedule isn't all over the map....been awhile since i've been out shootin so i'm going through withdrawls! haha.....thats for the invite though...I do appreciate it! |

Good afternoon, I've just LLCed myself. The cost was $130.00. Took a couple of days to go through. First they need to check to see if the name of your LLC is available. Once you have the registered with the state, then you need to apply for an EIN through the IRS. You can also do this on line. It took all of 10 minutes for the IRS. Got my EIN number right away. All that was left was to open a business checking account. |
Agreed, I've done this for 3 people so far. $130, credit card required (not debit). Wasn't sure if the ATF allow it being an LLC, and not a INC. Not sure. Like I said, not an expert just throwing in my 2 cents. Hollar when your schedule clears up, possibly picking up a Walther P22 this next week, need to sight it in ;) |

I'll have to look into it a little further. I'm going to see if I can get the required signatures first and if that fails i'll look into the llc route possibly. Lets say I get the required signature from the Chief of police here and I move to another city within Wisconsin...do I need to get it approved with them also or is it ok since it was approved where I previously lived in the state? As soon as my schedule clears up a little i'll let you know...should have my AR by then too...its getting hard to be patient! haha! |
Pretty good tax breaks being a business owner! |
Watch out for the taxman, ![]() BTH out |
Nope. You can move to anywhere in the state. If you move out of state you'll need to notify the BATFE. |
| Thanks Louie...thats what I was thinking but wanted to make sure. I wish I lived on the West side of the state...my old boss and good friend of mine out there is a Chief of police...that would come in handy when it came to aquiring signatures! haha...guess i'll have to make due here for now! |
