I have a pre ban AR-15 , registered with calif., That has a collasible stock on since before the ban. Went shooting and a few shooter's were saying this is not legal. No wehere in the regs could I find it saying I was in violation, or what was legal. Whats the skinny. Thanx for your commits in advance, Rodical

Since the federal ban sunsetted it basically makes all legal owned aws pre ban status.
other words if you legally registered your gun in ca per sb23 you are fine to add the collapsable stock.flash hider, etc.

Whoever was telling you what you heard is smoking crack.

The Federal 1994 ban has sunset and is no longer in force.  CA laws are different than the Fed ban.

Your AR is a registered assault weapon and can have any and all 12276.1PC evil features (except a grenade launcher, which is also intrinsically illegal even standalone as a destructive device).  There are no degrees, shades, tiers or levels of assault weapons status: if it is a reg'd AW it is "fully evil" and can't get any "worse".

On Sept. 14 2004 when the Fed AWB expired, tens of thousands of reg'd AW owners in CA were throwing on telestocks/folding stocks, and/or flash hiders on their reg'd AWs.

When you say "registered" you do mean that you mailed in the Assault Weapon Registration card with the fee, right?  The paperwork you filled out at the dealer when you bought it was NOT registration.  You be surprised how many people mistakenly think they have a registered AW simply because they filled out the DROS and 4473 when they originally bought it.

Ditto, and if it is actually registered as an AW you can put any evil features on it you want regardless of when you acquired it.  Federal pre- vs post-ban means nothing any more.

One caveat:  California measures overall length with the stock in the most collapsed position.  Minimum legal overall length is 26 inches.  I don't know if it's physically possible to create an AR with a legal lenth barrel and a collapsible stock that is less than 26 inches, but be mindful of that requirement.

Definitions you should be aware of in the Penal Code

Thanx for the replies, Yes I went down town to the federal building with it and did the paper work and dont remember, finger print. Paid the $20 or so. I remember them measuring it, i think. Any wayz, I just don't want to loose it to some Barney Fife, And I want to obey the Laws. Again, thanx, Rodical

They measured the barrel length or OAL. It was so long ago, really don't know exact details besides took it in, showed the weapon, took my money, and off I legally went.

And the confusion begins...

You went to a federal building to have measured and register your AW with the state?

What you've posted doesn't make any sense. I'd really confirm you have a CA-DOJ registered AW before you go taking it out in public again.  The guys at the range may in fact be right...

I did take to the doj, Down town sacto, and still have the reciept for it from them. So I'm not worried about it being legal Now. Thanx for the replies.

Oh yeah! I was one of the tens of thousands. I had already sold all but one of my "Post ban" uppers here on EE and on ebay when you could sell such things and purchased brand new "Preban" uppers for my rifles. I just didn't install them to the lowers until after sunset. I was at the range on my first day off after the 14th to battle sight them all. .   I had kept the one "Post ban" upper just in case the sunset didn't go through, I wouldn't be completly un-AR'ed. I sold that one as soon as I could as well.

Don't worry about those guys at the range. They obviously are not well informed.
