Anybody know what is going on over there? When I drove past yesterday I noticed that there is a new wooden fence up on the west end of the range and some new fence panels on the ground by the office. |
While it is essentially a pile of dirt. It is not plagued by range Nazis. No 1 shot per sec, no only load 5rnds, no restrictions on ammo ect..... and on top of that, most times you can be out there alone and run shoot and move drills. |
Where is Tom Bean located? Do you need to be a member? It would be nice to rapid fire and be able to shoot the lesser priced FMJ rounds. |
Because it's the ONLY place to shoot up North. And there's no ammo restrictions. And there's not range nazis. And it's the best price around. |
It is the only public place in Texas where "As long as it is legal, it is OK". Every other public range has restrictions of some sort. |
1. No range nazis 2. Can set up at any distance you like, up to ~150 yards. 3. Can throw your own skeet without paying crazy prices. 4. Often have the place to yourself. 5. Can set up prone, or bench, no hassles from range nazis. 6. No range nazis. 7. Can shoot full metal jacket ammunition. 8. Can shoot full-auto. 9. Can detonate tannerite. 10. Can shoot unique targets, as long as you clean it up. 11. Can draw from a holster, and rapid-fire. 12. No range nazis. 13. No mag capacity limits. 14. No forced cease fires. 15. Moving and shooting practice. 16. No range nazis. Me and a coworker went up on Saturday. Nice day outside, perfect for shooting. Place was empty. There is a skeet thrower sitting there that works PERFECT. We shot throw-your-own for about a half-hour when two other guys drove up in a pickup.... stayed about 45 minutes on the berm. Then we had the place to ourselves again and shot pistol and rifle... Was giving some tips on marksmanship.... and having the place quiet without 15 shooters on either side made this MUCH more pleasant. Yeah, its a drive.... but it is the closest thing to shooting on your own land I can imagine. |
i dont believe the op stated that he just noticed that the rang was closed he stated that he noticed the NEW construction there that doesnt make any sense the mckinney AIRPORT cant anex a property almost 2 miles away from their 10 year expected growth and expantion area now the CITY OF MCKINNEY did anex the land from airport rd to county rd 404 bordering lowry crossing several years ago due to the developement boom ccgun rang was losing business and didnt want to lose more money fighting the city as they had been doing to prevent the annex of the land they lost business due to the noise restrictions the city code had in place and forced the rang portion to cease fir at certain hours of the day at that point they shut the doors but still maintain chl classes |
I guess I'm just spoiled by growing up shooting outside not on a range. I've been out there a few times shooting with friends but I'd rather just shoot somewhere out in the woods. There's plenty of public land around here where you can go out and shoot to your hearts content if you don't have any other place you can go. |
Care to share the locale of such "plenty public land around here"? Tom Bean's a haul from north Dallas.... but its usually worth it for reason's Falarak mentioned. But don't forget your earplugs. Its a 25-mile round trip to the nearest pair.

I am pretty sure the City of McKinney stole it via Eminent Domain. |
If he did, it wouldn't be so deserted and shooter friendly. |

I think Phil is doing the classroom part of his class at the Holiday Inn in McKinney; it's been awhile since I've seen him. He's got a website HERE |
