| Need some suggestions in explaining which of the two, American Securities and Cannon, is a better buy along with the benefits. A friend is looking for a fire resistant multi-featured safe, i.e. shelf space and rifle racks, etc. |

Many safe brands are made in the LA basin meaning that they are several hundred dollars cheaper here if you look around. Shipping is a major expense with an eight hundred pound item. I ended up with a beautiful Cannon safe from a gun store that was changing hands. The thing is firelined, has the gloss finish, gold trip, gold three spoke handle, and the upgraded electric lock - it's gloss irovy white and would look good in any pimp's front room. It comes with a flexible interior which is split at the top with a very large shelf across the top - big enough to put ammo cans across. It has a space that would allow a handful of really tall rifles to sit - they'd have to be 50 something inches tall to fit through the hole. I use that shelf for my special tools and jigs, loaded go-to magazines, and a few extra items. The lower part of the safe is split about 60/40 with the 60 percent side allowing for rifles to run across the back and then a second set in a "U" in front of those and along each side. In the back I put my bolt action rifles which tend to be longer, around the "U" go the semiautomatics and my shotgun. The remaining 40% of the safe - the lefthand side - has three shelves which I use to store my military records, photo albums and other small high-value items like GPS units, ham radios, and jewelry. Most safes are made of 10 gauge walls with doors strong enough. Much is made of the door construction when in fact the walls are the weakest part of any safe. Only a complete idiot attempts to pick a modern lock and a fool trys to break open the door. The most important features are the size and the firelining. You can quickly judge a safe by its weight. Heavier is better. |
