I have a non threaded 16 inch heavy barrel. Should I have someone thread and permanently solder a compensator on it or leave it as is?

I haven't seen anyone sell a ban compliant heavy barrel with a compensator, otherwise I would replace the entire upper.

Any thoughts?

Leave it as is. I freakin' HATE comps on 5.56 rifles; all they do is piss off the guy next to you at the range.

Save $ for a Preban lower, and then do whatever you'd like

I prefer crowned barrels. Gives the hunting rifle look for me.

what do you want to use it for? if you want faster follow up shots, like for 3 gun competition, got for the comp, other wise, leave it.

I think it depends on how the rifle will be utilized. In 5.56, you will not likely notice a big difference in recoil especially with a heavy barrel unless you are firing rapidly. I have both with and without a compensator. For my uses(recreational shooting/hunting) I think a compensator comes down to want rather than need.

This.

Comps are also not permitted for US service rifle rifle competition or SAFS training events.

There are new compensators on the market that are much better at controlling noise deflection.  Spike's Dynacomp, PW's FSC series and the BCE BattleComp are all decent brakes that significantly reduce concussion.

A comp on a 5.56 pisses you off?  You need better ear protection.

Nothing to do with the ears, it's what it does to my sinuses. Same reason I don't particularly care for magnum pistol cartridges.

It'll be a cold day in hell when what the guy next to me at the range thinks, is a deciding factor in what sort of muzzle device I choose.  I'm never an asshole for no reason, but damn, it's a shooting range.  If they can't deal with loud noises and concussion, then they need to find a new past time.

..............now, the guy next to us sighting in his .22 while we were shooting a full-auto M4?  OK, maybe the brass rain started to piss him off.  But I was losing my full-auto virginity, so it was a monumental occasion.

Poppin' that cherry is so much fun. F/A: best way to turn money into smoke and noise ever created.

(I don't need a new pastime, I'll just move a couple lanes over. And maybe ask what you're shooting. )

Yes.  Yes it is.

The range was packed.  Everyone was doing their own thing, and when we started going FA, it went quiet and people just started looking like .  FA wasn't unheard of at that range, but it wasn't a very common occurrence, either.  An 11.5" FA will surely get people's attention.   Funny thing is, people seem more interested when we threw a suppressor on it.  It was fun, but I was ready to remove the suppressor after a few mags.  I ate plenty of gas that day.

Different means to the same end result; burning money.
