My desktop shuts down with no warning and no errors..............HELP

On the laptop now. It seems to run about 1/2 hour after it cools down then shuts down like you unplugged it.

CPU fan on, variable cooling strip fans (two) both running. It is about two years old so I guess it is time for a new one.

Check inside and see if the fan is running.  Sounds like it's overheating to me.  Most computers have at least two fans.  There will be one on the power supply that blows air out of your computer.  There is also one on top of the CPU itself.

I'd agree with GMW that it's probably overheating.

When you turn your computer on, press F2 (or whatever button your computer tells you) to enter setup immediately after you push the power button to turn it on.

If you aren't familiar with the BIOS menu, it's probably not a good idea to start changing things.  Some computers allow the use of a mouse, but most of the one's I've seen are keyboard only.  Along the edge of the screen somewhere will be directions on how to navigate.

One of the selections you should be able to access will show you your CPU temperature and maybe even your motherboard temperature.  Watch what these numbers do until your computer turns off.  If the temperatures stabilize and your computer does not shut off, then come back and let us know.

Failing problems with your temp, it could be some other type of hardware failure, a virus, or maybe a corrupted system file.

Took it apart, one grill was pretty much clogged up from the inside, and it was very dusty. Thanks for the ideas, if it goes down again I will find a CPU for the cheap so I can keep using the laptop for other things.

I moved all the papers away from it also, I am a rotten housekeeper!

I'd recommend a thorough cleaning with compressed air, paying special attention to any chips with fins, the power supply box and the fans themselves. I'd then make sure everything was seated properly, memory chips, daughter boards, various connectors and make sure the fans actually work. If it still does not work, I would pull and reseat the chips, cards and connectors. Failing that, I would start pulling things off the mobo.

Did all the cleaning already, it's two years old so will buy a new box and then play with it later, thanks for the info though.

That's not so old. What brand/make? What socket? I have cpu fans/coolers for a few set ups and plenty of thermal compound (paste) to spare. Be more than happy to send you what I got.

Last time I had a similar situation happening, it was the motherboard.

I have seen a faulty power supply result in roughly the same symptoms though.

I spent all day tracking down and killing some particularly obnoxious malware.

It's called "Antivirus 2009" - coming soon to your computer.

Bad shit.

Look into a program called Malware Bytes, it's free and it will keep that shit off your system.

Yeah, that's what I used.  It hung up during installation looking for WordPerfect12 disc which of course I don't have but then it seemed to work ok regardless.  I think my dose is cured.  It was an all day pita though.

I think I caught the clap looking for a download from Jay Leno to link on one of the threads here too.  I coulda shared with all my Arf buds...
