Short version: Some friends of my in-laws are visiting and want to go shooting. They are thinking about purchasing a handgun and potentially getting a concealed weapons permit. Since I live a little ways away from Minnesota, I'm hoping somebody can give some general info.
What is the process to get a permit? Other than federal buildings; what are the restrictions on places you can carry? Is Minnesota a "may" issue or "Shall" issue state? Any thing else I need to let them know? |

I am assuming their friends are from Minnesota.
Process involves attending a CCW class by a certified instructor with range time for proficiency with handgun. Take documentation and money for fee ( not to be more than $100 and in cash) to the sheriffs office of THE COUNTY THEY LIVE IN. They will get their permit within 30 days unless they are denied, in which there will be a letter explaining the denial. Federal building (including Vetrans Buildings) court houses, schools/daycare,prisons and mental hospitals. And of course the Mall of America (Minnesota inside joke, look at other threads in our hometown forum). Minnesota is a shall issue state. |

It is a NOT CONCEALED WEAPONS PERMIT but rather it is a PERMIT to Carry!
The permit does not discern between concealed or open carry. While I consider open carry stupid! Nuff Said Permits to purchase are from the LE agency that answers 911 calls for their residence. They are free. Usual turn around time is 5 days. Permit to carry are from the Sheriff's office of the county they reside in. Certificate of completion of a Permit to Carry Class Application completed Payment submitted in person at the office as designated by the Sheriff's Dept. |
