Residents voted by a large margin to overturn an ordinance that would have put some restrictions on home gun firing ranges less than a month after it was approved by the Town Council.

The ordinance, originally approved in early March, would have meant that residents couldn't fire their guns less than 250 feet from other homes, would have restricted shooting to the hours of 9 a.m. to sunset and would have capped shooting firearms to four hours a day per person in a household.

The ordinance also required home gun firing ranges to have proper backstops that would be sized and positioned correctly and catch all projectiles.

Residents voted 432 to 120 to overturn the ordinance at a special town meeting on March 31.

Opposition to the ordinance was led by the town's Republican party. John French, the chair of the Republican Town Committee, started the petition that triggered the special vote, according to RTC's Facebook page. In a statement, the party's town committee noted it was a bipartisan effort.
