Can you use an AR15 for Coyote hunting in Indiana on public land?
Also, what is the season for Coyote? |

M4Madness ... what load do you use for Coyotes? A soft point? Expanding hollow point? Ballistic tip? Open tip match? Right now? A .458 SOCOM.
My only other upper at the moment is my M16's 14.5" 5.56MM barrel, which is too short to use on a non-SBR lower. I'm going to build a .25 WSSM set-up one of these days for coyotes. As for bullet selection, just about anything (other than FMJ) works if you don't want to save the hide. I'm not sure what JimTh uses, but ballistic tips seem to be pretty popular for varmints these days. |

| I started coyote hunting with Win white box 45 gr JHP. Those things were explosive and wouldn't penetrate well if you hit a bone. I tried some 60 (62?) gr VMAX and they penetrated better but made gigantic (6" or so!) exit wounds if you hit a bone. My rifle didn't shoot them very well either. I started handloading and have some Barnes 53 gr TSX loads that I want to try. They're supposed to expand quickly but not blow up, should be a good fur friendly bullet. |

JimTH, you might want to try the 'Varmint Grenade' I believe they are made by Barnes. It's technology derived from desining frangible bullets for militay training. They enter with a .22 cal hole, basically disentegrate mushing up the insides of a coyote and leaving little to no exit hole. I'm not a fur hunter, but if they work well (and I read in Handloader magazine they did), they should be a great fur gettin' bullet!

A long time ago, spoke to a LEO about shooting hi power firearms in IN. It had been a long time discussion on wheather firing a centerfire anywhere here was legal. He said that other than deer, duck, and turkey you can hunt squirrels with a 7 M/M mag. What is illegal "discharging any firearm in an unsafe manner". It's up to the LEO to determine what is unsafe, "discretionary law" . <>< Duce

If I'm hunting on my own land, what CAN'T I use? I'm assuming no hunting from vehicle, no lasers, no hunting from or over roads and such. But if you can hunt from vehicle offroad, or something like that, let me know. Lasers are legal for all game in Indiana, deer included. You can use ANYTHING to hunt coyotes –– 50 BMG, if you want. You cannot hunt from a motorized vehicle, regardless if you are a half mile from a road and on your own property. |

I own 80 acres north/east of Indy, we've taken 16 coyote off it this year, 4 by rifle, the rest by trap. Don't worry about the pop. Sounds like fun. I went on some public land near Lake Monroe, but, not surprisingly, saw nothing. Then, I went on a farm in Johnson county, and again saw nothing. Dang it, I want to shoot a Coyote!!!! |

For some reason, the last time I read it, I thought that there was a "not" in there somewhere. I probably will never actually use a laser, but its good to know that I can if I want to. |

A little coyote 101. Coyote are smarter than any dog/deer, have a nose better than a bloodhounds, eyesight better than a turkeys. When calling they will circle down wind, so set up so you can cover right and left of down wind. They will come to bait, gut pile/pile of road kill. Treestands work but must be 20' +.For more try:
