Mailed mine in December with return receipt dated 12/29.  Took 3 and 1/2 weeks for them to send a letter stating they received it.  Word was they were catching up and processing applications a bit faster.  Hopefully that is the case as I know it took about 4 months for some friends of mine.

If you call them and ask about how the process is going, they'll usually just review it while they're checking.

Persistence has it's place.  I got mine in 3 weeks.

fiance just got hers. took between four and five months compared to mine a few years ago that only took one months mailbox to mailbox. They tried to say that it took so long becuase they use a private company for the background and criminal history checks and the comany is located on the gulf coast and was hit hard and is still trying to recover from hurricane Ike. I think thats retarded since the state of texas should be able to do their own checks using TCIC/NCIC and everybody else is recovered from Ike.

Mom still hasnt gotten hers back yet.

Also the new CHL licenses look F'ING RETARDED. I saw my fiances and i was like wtf, this thing cant be real. It doesnt bear anywhere close to a resemblence of the TX DL's like the old CHL's do.

Someone told you wrong.  DPS sends their own people into the counties.  However, according to what I have read from others here, Ike did cause DPS a backlog near Houston.

+1 on the DPS problem with Houston. There is a DPS officer/s assigned to cover different parts of the state when it comes to the background portion. Seeing as how the city of Houston was pretty much shut down for 1-2 months because of Ike, you can bet that CHL requests coming out of Houston will take a little bit longer.

I sent my packet in around the 8 of January, and when I call them, they aren't even showing its been put into the system yet. So....................wait times are probably still sucking.

Still waiting from September for my fiancées CHL. DPS said that due to backlog of background checks around the Houston area that it would take a while. They were not kidding.

I mailed my packet in on 6/15/2008.
DPS told me I was missing some data so I sent that in and they confirmed receipt on 8/19/2008.
I got a letter from DPS in late September indicating they are running behind due to Ike.
I've been calling them once a week, every week, since late November.  DPS is still waiting on my background check since November.

I'm getting really frustrated.  I have gone through background checks for my job and education.  Those background checks were done in a timely fashion and I've never had any problems.  I fail to see why Harris county would be so slow in completing my background check.

I'm planning to send a letter to my state senator to see if he can get something moving in the right direction.

my mom told me that she called DPS's CHL office in austin directly and was told this by the lady on the phone. I think its retarded since they shouldnt have a private company doing any kind of background checks for the state government. Tx is is SHALL ISSUE state and all they should be checking for is criminal convictions and back due child support and one or two things that i cant remember right now. They shouldnt have to hire a private company for that, it should be done in house.

Also my mom is convinced that my fiance got hers back first becasue my mom has been alive longer and has more history, and three last names since she's on her third marriage.

They don't have a private company doing it.   Your mom misunderstood or the person at DPS misspoke.  The do use private vendor's for things like making the license, so it would be easy to get it confused, especially a tird hand report.

It took 94 days from the time DPS got my packet until the status changed Application complete License active and another 4 days for the plastic to arrive in the mail.  The status of my application changed from processing to complete on a Sunday which proves that DPS is working weekends to clear the back log. For what it's worth, I live in Harris county.
