With all of the custom knives I see (you know who you are posting new knife photos every week ) It has got me interested in looking at getting set up to build my own knives.

I have done a little google work, but has anyone actually built their own here in the HTF? Any insight or advice?

Yep.

Be prepared for some initial frustrations.

And you'll need a good grinder, I use a Bader BM-3.

Been too long since I made one, now that I think about it.

my 10 yo nephew made one for him to take back to Sweden with him since he cant barely get them over there.  we got the stuff from www.knifekits.com.  they are also here in GA.

it didnt come out like i wanted it since we got pushed for time and had to rush it.  but he loved it.  used buffalo bone for the handle :)

Those folder kits look pretty cool.

I'd really like to have a tactical-type folder with a damascus blade and carbon fiber handle material.  I've seen some customs made like that, but they're crazy expensive.

I may do that. What I am interested in making is something similar to their "bird & trout", model 1 & 1B. Just simple, high quality steel hunting/skinning fixed blade knives.

Well, over in the Armory we have our own blade forum here at ARFCOM; I have read some neat project threads over there from guys who either make their own from scratch, or from people who have bought theirs from just such a craftsman.

If you are not even interested in knife making the 5 part knife making thread is well worth a read in the blade forum. Its well written and illustrated.

What do beginner knife makers sell D2 or S30V knives with micarta handles for? I know what an Ingram goes for
This is beginning to really really interest me as a little side business/hobby to tinker around with.

Usually around 200-250 depending on the sheath, materials and design. Any more than that and you are paying for a name/logo.
And......S30V for the win.

Yes, he sell used metal working equipment. I know of member here who has built some nice guns with the lathe he got from him.

ETA: He has a couple of very nice sanders with built in dust collection as well.

Caver check your IM's.

I made a bunch about 10 years ago, I have not made any lately. They take a surprising amount of time.
Here are a few of mine:

The one on the left is a Bear/MGC blade blank the rest are ground by me out of 440C or 01. All the sheaths are made by me. Nothing spectacular, but they work well.

I have a 1X48 belt sander made by Grizzly tools. It is slow, but beats the heck out of a file for stock removal!

I recommend David Boye's book Step By Step Knifemaking: You Can Do It, and Barney and Loveless' How to Make Knives. That is the only instruction I had.

Not as happy as I was with Landi now that I see he is ordering a mass produced blank from a knife supply store for $20 each. Thinking of saving my $130 and grinding the same profile myself.
