The hog hunting thread got me ready to post questions. I have been planning to come down to Oklahoma for a DIY hunt later this year with some family. Hog hunting seems like the obvious choice for a less formal fun hunt, but I'm open to suggestions. I hunt a fair bit of deer at home, but yet to hunt hogs. I can find plenty of outfitters, but not a ton of info on diy hog hunts on public land. Where/when should I go?

I was kind of planning on coming down over Thanksgiving, but it sounds like January might be better?

We have finally gotten over a year without a single hog picture on the farm. But Wister WMA is still got pigs. My buddy is getting pictures a mile away. September is the best time to locate them by focusing on water and wallows. Plus locating mast crops on public lands. Remember you can’t bait public lands. So you have to allow nature to do that for you. Focus on public land with water such as streams rivers and lakes. Lakes are easier to scout with a boat while fishing. You will want to set up trail cameras and pattern them and like hunting deer tree stands are effective. It’s like anything else your success will depend on how hard you’re willing to work. Good luck!
