What the monkey f*ck with whipped cream and sprinkles is this? |
| My office is right by the Westin and last year DragonCon caught me off guard. I went out for lunch and there were people in SWAT gear, zombies, Star Trek uniforms, and steampunk outfits walking around. Of course I had to buy a ticket and check it out. I had fun at the robotics sessions. I learned to build a home made jet engine with an afterburner. I'll be going back this year. |
|
It's about six different conventions merged together, 40,000+ people gather for Labor Day weekend, with concerts, costume contests, famous actors and actresses, board and computer gaming, panels about writing, costuming, TV shows, movies, cartoons, etc... And lots of alcohol and scantily clad women (sadly, also some men, and people of both genders who need to remember that Spandex(tm) is a privilege, not a right). I'll be there hanging out with a few authors and imbibing various alcoholic beverages and looking for women to meet :-) Just a note: convention security and the police will be checking any apparent weapons they see, functional projectile weapons are against the rules and blades are to be peacebonded. |

Quoted: I was looking over the schedule and they have an armory track. Some of the talks will be on NFA weapons, explosives, and edged weapons. Yes, and they purportedly DO scan visitors to the Armory with metal detectors. Kevin Dockery has a fairly thick binder of the tax stamps or other documentation for the weapons he brings. |

I was looking over the schedule and they have an armory track. Some of the talks will be on NFA weapons, explosives, and edged weapons. I think this will be the third year that the armory will be at the con and I was really excited to seem them the first year they came. But that all changed once I talked to them. Those folk can feel free to prove me wrong, but the people that run the armory track come off as a bunch of self-important, "I know more than you," obnoxious, "look at all my cool toys (no you cannot touch them, but you can feel free to ask me how awesome I am)," gun owners. I left when some guy MUZZLE SWEPT THE ENTIRE FREAKING ROOM TEN F*&KING TIMES WHILE SETTING UP FOR HIS TALK and then started the talk with something along the lines of "you are not suppose to point guns at people, but I know these are unloaded and it would be hard for me to give the talk without pointing these guns at someone so I am going to ignore that rule, but don't worry it's still safe." ETA: That's how I really feel. |

I also like the other tech and space related tracks. They have a fairly entertaining wraslin' event on Friday night and lots of sci-fi related actors/writers/etc. At least one Mythbuster shows up every year. This will be my 10th year. I have meet a lot of fun, interesting, people and made a number of friends over the years. And yes, its like 10 different conventions all rolled into one. Sci-Fi/fantasy movies and tv Sci-Fi/fantasy books Comics Costumes Board games Computer games Space/technology Concerts (although none that I think are any good) And other things that after 10 years I still have not seen. |

Sounds like Kevin Dockery, he's written a number of books with SEALs and others and tends to have an attitude, he did serve in the Army but not in any elite units (other than the Old Guard in DC, which is ceremonial). |

Thats my boy! Smart kid...as long as he learns later to at least ACT like they're not all that until after you make any deals, otherwise she'll get whatever she wants unfortunately. |

Quoted: Quoted: Don't forget to visit the "Dub your own Hentai" movie room... A Nuclear Engineer buddy of mine is speaking about nuclear waste disposal on Friday What time? Do you know what track it is a part of? Check the website. Animation, I believe. I've had to deal with that track director a few times this week, and I believe she mentioned that. |

Quoted: So what would be some tips for a first time goer? Be prepared for large, smelly crowds of nerds. If you plan on going inside any of the hotels, you HAVE to buy a pass. They've really cracked down on that the past two years. If you do, you won't be able to move inside the hotels, that's how packed they will be. I'll be pretty busy through-out the con, but if anyone goes, give me a shout and I'll try to get over to see you.

Quoted: So what would be some tips for a first time goer? If possible, find someone with similar interests who has been before to go with. If that isn't possible, at least read through the programming schedule in advance to decide what you want to do and try to figure out how to get from point A to point B, it can get pretty crowded, especially when some of the big events empty out (like the costume contest). Unless things have seriously been upgraded, cellphone and even text messaging can be unreliable due to the large number of people trying to use it in a small area, so you probably want to arrange meeting places with your friends in advance. Going for a single day, Saturday is probably your best bet, with the parades in the morning and the floor show at night (the costumes get a bit more risque after about 9pm). I don't like how they rearranged the bar area and cigar terrace at the Hyatt, it used to be a good place to meet up with folks and watch the scenery go past, but the new design sucks for that, they'll probably lose a lot of money in lost alcohol sales over it. |

ETA: That's how I really feel. Thanks for the heads up. There some other things I'd like to see that conflict with the Armory events. I don't feel like dealing with assholes or getting muzzle swept so I think I'll pass on the NFA stuff. |

So what would be some tips for a first time goer? Download the app. It's got maps and panel times. Wear comfortable shoes and bring a camera. If your only going for one day make that day Saturday. Don't expect to see everything. Take some time to take it all in. Bring booze. Bring booze. |

Just in case you have an overwhelming urge to be surrounded by desperate virgins, and all their associated odors, your opportunity awaits. Having attended a technical school here in GA, I am familiar with the crowd. You guys have fun with that. :) We will. And thanks for staying home. Dragon*con is better off without people like you anyway. |

You bet your ass it's fun. The rest of y'all can stay away, it's fine. More for me. You left out the one of me and pedo bear. |

So what would be some tips for a first time goer? Go the day before the show starts or early in the morning to get your pass. The show is pretty well run for such a large convention, but they always do a really, really bad job with the passes. I've seen people wait in line for HOURS just to get their badges and you have to have a badge to get anywhere in the con. |

I'll probably take the kids to see the parade again this year. :) I do not attend the convention though, just not really my thing enough to spend money on it. |

I was able to just walk up and pick mine up, no line. |
