Tell me about Elko.
Here's the deal, I might have a chance to finally make my escape from the PRK for a job with the state of Nevada. The job will be in Elko. Please tell me all you can about the area, the good, the bad, anything out of the ordinary I should know. What's the crime like there? Gangs, drug activity, areas to avoid. What's the local LE like, corrupt small town cops or friendly small town cops? Ideally I would hopefully only have to stay in Elko for a year or two until something opened up in Reno or Vegas where I have friends and family to be near. About me: late 20's, single, no kids, votes conservative, not your typical hippy PRK resident, loves Nevada, very pro-2A, hates hippies and freeloaders. Also, anyone know what the process would be to transfer/obtain my CCW w/ Elko County? I've had mine through Washoe for a few years, just curious what the process is like. I'd like to stay in Elko to keep my commute short, probably would be looking for a roomie or a small apartment as well. TIA for any info. You guys are always very helpful. Hopefully in a few months I'll be a Nevada resident. |

Han, When you move to Nevada you will have to keep your Washoe County permit and do an address change from Cali to your new address in Elko County. As long as you are a Nevada resident, when you renew your Nevada permit you can apply in apply in Elko County (if that county is where you are residing at the time) for your renewal. Until then it is just an address change. Hope this helps. Be Safe. Joe |

My biz partner worked for the PDs office there for a number if years. I recall him saying the home values fluctuate greatly, depending on the price of metals. If you're looking to rent, that may not affect you.
I'll try to pick his brain for you, but he's been away from there for at least 6 years, so his info may not apply. |

Been out there off and on for the last two weeks scouting and hunting for mule deer in the Ruby mountains.
If you like the outdoors it is probably one of the greatest areas in Nevada. Lamoille Canyon is definitely one of the most spectacular alpine areas in the lower 48. It can honestly be described as the Yosemite of Nevada without the crowds. It's a half hour east of Elko. Elko is still an old school ranching/mining town.............meaning they don't put up with much shit when it comes to gangs and other troublemakers. Dining options are pretty good.......I highly recommend The Star, a Basque restaurant in town, and The Bitter End in Lamoille. Drugs are like any other small town in Nevada............meth, meth, meth. Stay away from the obvious dirtbags and you shouldn't have any problems. As far as dating goes...............I'd bet there are one or two date-able females attending Great Basin College. Go take a few fun courses and get some numbers. There is also an active pistol league, the Northeastern Nevada Rifle & Pistol Association, run by a friend of mine that puts on some great USPSA and 3-Gun matches. I would live there in a heartbeat if I was in your situation (young and living in California) and had the chance at a good job with NDOT. ––-AllAlphas |
