Does any one use an AR to hunt white tail (deer)? What type of barrel/ammunition would cause the least amount of collateral damage to the meat?

i've used recently:

win 64 grn ppt in 20" 1/9
win 64 grn ppt in 16" 1/8.5 (ak-sar3)
smk 52 grn in a 20" 1/8

damage to meat was minimal since shots were placed correctly.... these were spine and frontal chest shots

i used to use a ruger mini 14 ranch rifle when i was younger...it did the trick w/ correctly placed shots.

The general consensus is the 64 grain PP's are great.  Federal also has a premium grade with a heavy jacket...Its either a Swift bullet or something similar.

Stay away from varmit type bullets...most .2245" diameter bullets are varmit types and are made to fragment.  Its like shooting 30-30 bullets out of a .300 RUM

Colt HBar Match with 24" barrel. 55 grain Nosler ballistic tips. All head shot. Zero meat loss.

Never hunted anything with a .223 that is larger than havelina. Having grown up in CA and hunting in the Sierra Nevadas, the white tail deer up there are pretty large. I'm afraid the .223 will just bounce off. Also CA only allows .30(7.62) for hunting deer.

bout the only place in TX you couldnt hunt deer w/ a .223 would probably be mule deer in west tx or the bigger white tail (legend of the muy grande type) down in the valley.

Would y'all recommend an upper similar to the bushy varmiter? I was looking at m&a's varmit upper.
