Greetings,
We have been looking for a piece of land that we could call our own range, as discussed in previous topics.  I just recently stubmbled across a reasonable priced 40acre parcel that is about 20-minutes from the I-94 area/Menomonie area.   Does this seem like a resonable location that could suffice and be enjoyed by shooters from Wisconsin and Minnesota alike???

it would only be a good place for training if it is in a low lying area that has lots of standing water and is the perfect breeding ground for mesquitos. If it is then it would be a great place....

cheers,

The only real problem I see with Menomonie is that it's about 40 mins away from MSP.  Granted, I am probably mistaken, but I would surmise that if you got attendees from the SE WI (1 million plus populous) area, another 40 mins id no big deal when you've gone on a 4-5 hour drive.  If you can find something in Dane county, or further East, you may be able to lure in the IL/IN shooters.  I understand it may be further from your home area than you would like, but it also open up more opportunities for students, I beleive.

Gotta agree with MPX here.  +/- 40 mins isn't going to make much difference for anyone in SE WI or further.

Menomonie is around 1 to 1.5 hours from most places in the Twin Cties. The current range DE uses is also about that distance but North further into MN. So the land in Menomonie would put DE classes between 2-3 hours closer for WI students while staying about the same distance for most MN students.
Sounds good to me.

Sully,

If this is for your home range, I'd expect your attendance for "casual" attendees from MN would drop off if they have to drive any further than an hour or so.

If that's not a concern, something in the Wisconsin Dells area is perfect--halfway between MN an IL, and dead center in WI.  You know, shoot during the day, leaving the kids at the water park and fudge shop, eager to show you their new mocassins when you are done with class

Ah, I see.  In that case, I'd say you should see some increase in WI attendance.  If you're moving from the current range, this sounds like a reasonable compromise for location.  If you're planning on keeping the current range as well - you might want the new one further South and East to draw people from other population centers.

My understanding is that Sully would like to have his own DE dedicated range, and this would be it. The current range space is not owned by DE and therefore has certain limitations/setbacks that a dedicated range would not.

If you are looking for a range, I second the idea that you look in and around Dane County.
It is centrally located, property is pretty cheap, and there really aren't any other ranges nearby.

DETC moving closer?

Hell, Tomah would be close enough for me.

Perhaps someone in the Stevens Point/Wausau area has connections, being the geographical center of WI, and not any farther for the MN folks.

We would  always be happy to do more stuff at BulletcatchR's place.  It seems to close enough to the Dells as mentioned above, and is easy to get to.  It offers many opportunities.  Especially if we can bring out a lot of my handgun steel for some high speed handgun and tactics courses.  This should make it a little easier for those from IL and IN to get some quality range time.  Other than that we still need to find something that allows us to do stuff that is about 1.5-hours or so from our Twin Cities Metro, that will allow multiple ranges, a jungle walk or two, and a nice area to build a large shoot house maze.

Sully the location looks good. It's not really all that much further than what I drive for deer hunting or camping. I wouldn't hesitate to take the drive for a class.
