I'm thinking about doing 3 days Defensive Handgun 1 at Thunder Ranch, either Spring or Fall, 2003. I think it is more fun if we have a group of friends doing this together--therefore, this thread. It costs $650.00 for this course. I know it's a little stiff for a lot of us, but I'm sure it's worth it. Another option is a 1 day course of defensive handgun in DFW area, but I don't know much about it. I'm open for suggestion. Anyone is interested? Please let me know. Thanks. PS. I'll tack this for a week or so depending on the responses. UPDATE:01/20/2003 It seems like one day defensive handgun course is best for most of the members for now. I'll get info. and get back later. Thanks. |

Ok, how about this... We set a fee per person. They bring their own ammo. Jarhead would be a fine choice for an instructor, I also know that my older brother has some interesting personal defense, weapon retention training as well. 650.00 is what Thunder Ranch gets. Ouch! We need to pay two instructors. Jarhead_22 and DrJeffAllen. We also need a place to do it. I have a range, but it is small. No more than 8 shooters and two instructors, imho. This would mean 4 with Jarhead, 4 with DrJeff, rotating between them. You guys set a rate (you might ask those two what they want for a fee and go from there) Then, we'll pitch into the hat for food and sodas . Get back with me on the details. It is my house, my rules. I reserve the right to exclude people that irritate me. Also, I suspect Jarhead and DrJeff will want to add barriers, moving targets, etc. This means a work crew on Saturday to prepare the range, make barriers, targets, etc. 'School' on Sunday. You probably want to add 10-20.00 bucks per person to pay for materials, plywood, screws, etc. TRG ps. If we do it at my place, consider that my 'part' of the cost. |
Me too. I think we need to get ahold of Jarhead and my Brother and see if they are interested. 82nd might also want to participate as an instructor. Since he has been to that many handgun classes, he is just as qualified as the next guy. What do you think about a 50.00 per person fee. (7 guys @ 50.00 = 350.00) Split between 2-3 instructors, not bad for a days play. Add another 10-20.00 bucks for the cost of barriers, reactive target stands...60-75.00 for a days instruction in personal defense and handguns. Lunch, dinner as a potluck or pitch into a hat... Ammo...maybe 500 rounds each. (9mm at Wal-mart is 10.99 per 100) 60.00 bucks... Total per person for ammo, food, training, under $125.00 Thunder Ranch = 3 days for $650.00 (not counting ammo, food, lodging... Sounds pretty good to me. Get a sign up list started IMHO. |
Thanks Jeff. I'll contact Jarhead_22 (see if he is interested or not), and then see how many members want to do this. If we don't have enough, then I'll go with plan B. |

Guys/Gals... FWIW, DrJeffAllen is not just a guy that has a little bit of handgun experience. He is a professional, personal defense trainer. I have lost count of the number of martial arts disciplines he has mastered amd now teaches. I also know what he charges per person, per hour for instruction. I guarantee you are making a mistake by not JUMPING on this chance to get FREE instruction from him. I don't know if he will post here all the Expert/Trainers that he has trained/taught/worked with. Just FYI. TRG |
For me, any kind of handgun training would help. With training, I, at least, will know how, and what to react to a real situation. When I find out more from Jarhead_22, I'll update the title of the thread, amount of people participate, the date, etc... |

Uhhhh....wow. I just got an IM from mojo with the head's up on this. I'm honored to be considered instructor material, but I'm not entirely sure I've got what you guys need. As I said before, I'm happy to teach what I know, but I don't know if anyone would really get their money's worth out of me. When were y'all thinking of throwing this together? I work two days on/two days off, so my schedule can be a problem. |
If you are OK on this, then weekends are the best. You can tell us what weekends are best for you. I'll contact drjeffallen on the weekends that he is free. Then we start a poll to see what work for most of us . Location: Is TRG place OK? You can say 'no', because you won't hurt his feeling (j/K TRG). Materials: TRG posts some posts up. Are those what you need to teach? You can give us the course outline, and the time require to finish the course. The fee: You think how much is fair for you, then we use it as guideline. Thanks Jarhead_22 and drjeffallen. |
SonyPlaystation sends her thanks, I am sure. My place is in Canton. Jeff (both of them) knows what the place looks like. It needs some work before I would consider it ready for instruction. I am free from Thursday at noon, until Monday morning each week. I suspect that we will need to find a Saturday for 3-4 of us to set things up on the range, and plan for a Sunday training day. This does NOT mean the Saturday and Sunday have to be consecutive. Could be weeks between setting up the range and actually training on it. Let's get 82nd, Jarhead for pistol instructors. DrJeff for personal defense/Weapons retention/Consultant. TRG |
Sounds good. Just throw the ideas out here to see if they stick: --Moving targets as TRG suggested --Stationary ,multiple targets. Help me out here. guys. TRG: Can we use your house as clearing exercise? |
With live rounds, no. Unloaded, possibly. If it is not wet and muddy outside (ie. I don't have to clean the carpet for days....) then this might be a possiblity. I suspect what a half day on the range, and a half day with JeffAllen is going to be enough to keep us busy, but it is somethign we can plan at the first step. Step One: Mojo, Jarhead and JeffAllen need to come to my place on a Sunday to draw up a plan for the range. Set a price, training schedule, materials list, handouts for participants, budget etc. Step Two: Sign up sheet. Collect funds from participants to build the range up. Step Three: At least some of the participants come to the house to set things up, prepare targets, etc. Step Four: Training day. I think I will be home this Sunday. I think it might be tough to get all three of you together at my place. I know you are free on Sundays, Mojo, not sure on the Jeffs. TRG |
Start with which Sunday is best for you for planning. We'll pitch the dates to the Jeffs and see if they can make it. As for Bung's party, looks like I am going to be unable to attend. I might be able to drop in a for a little while, but I will have to see how things develop. What time does it start/end? And has he emailed directions out yet? |

Guys I might want in on this too. Let me know when and how much and I'll help out of I can. My young'un still has basketball on the next three Saturdays but I should be free after that. Sounds like a good thing. Since this is in Canton we might consider a first Monday weekend. The wife and kids could go to the Trades Days and shop while we "play." Might make it a little more family oriented. |
