My central a/c went out today (yes EdwardAvila & M4Madnes I promise to stay out of the new EE forum), and the repair service (Frymire) won't be here till next week. I'm fixin to run to Home Depot to get a cheapy window unit. I've got a big enough sheet of 1/2" plywood and I'll get some 2x4s for support legs.

What  else do I need? Or am I off my rocker????

You don't really need plywood or support legs. They sell mounting brackets to support the outside part of the unit. The units all come with adjustable side slides that extend out on either side of the unit. Shouldn't take more than 10 minutes to install. If you want to spend more $$$$, get one of the protable units that you can wheel from room to room. These use a vent hose out a window to exhaust the hot air. They have a water tank that needs to be emptied daily. (I have one of these to be used in emergencies).

Thank guys. Got a cheapo unit and one of the leveling mounting brackets. Ended up just propping it up in the window with the dinner table and a stack of wood shingles.

Cardboard & duct tape.

It'll do me until I can get it fixed.
