| Note: NOT Dicks Sporting Goods. Over the weekend I found myself in Dicks country store in Churubusco. About as far upstate as it gets. I was actually there looking for some random stuff but when I looked over the counter there was 3 dpms ar15s with the thordsen's stock on them. I asked to see one and the screw in the grip/stock part of it is not epoxyed. So I asked the guy at the counter what he knew about them and he said that's the way they come and they have not put epoxy on any of the ones they have sold. I asked him about the wording in the safe act about "easily changeable" or whatever it says and his reply was that troop b and another troop, whatever the one is that far north, have both told them that they are good to go not only on the stock issue but the epoxy side as well. I was surprised to say the least that they had anybody from the state police confirm anything about the SAFE act. Just wondering what the rest of you thought. |

Sorry. My words weren't exactly word for word from the law. Per the safe act website.....
Q: If I modify my gun by removing all design characteristics that makes it an assault weapon, do I have to register it? A: No. If you modify your gun so that it is not an assault weapon, you do not have to register it. The modification must be permanent however. This includes, for example, removing the bayonet lug by cutting or grinding, grinding off the threads on the barrel, removing the foregrip so that it cannot be readily reattached, or any change that cannot be reversed through reasonable means. |
|
Until someone gets jammed up for the sole reason of possessing a supposedly compliant rifle and the resulting legal battle and decision we will not really know. The undocumented word of some random trooper won't cut it.
Having said that however it would be awful hard to allow dealers to sell compliant rifles then some period of time later decide it was not compliant. You would have pretty solid legal ground to stand on if your rifle was configured the same as one being sold over the counter. It would be a case however of you might beat the rap but still take the ride as they say |
|
Right now we are in the friction stage of the next American Revolution.
Arguments over what the law is, what this or that means, how to comply, etc.. Some will get away with violations, some will be arrested and even convicted, some will suffer death... And then the event horizon is here. It COULD be a peaceful rebirth, but most birth is accompanied by blood. |

Guys...again...nothing in the actual unSAFE act law says that guns have to be permanently modified to be compliant.
If that were the case, ALL guns would be illegal...since you can duct tape a wood dowel to ANY gun and create a pistol grip...and ALL 10/22s would be illegal too, unless they were permanently epoxied into their stocks. NOTHING needs to be permanent...just compliant. |

Like I mentioned in another thread... if that "permanent" thing was actually correct, then EVERY damn semi auto rifle would have to have the stock screw ground/glued/welded/brazed. You can swap stocks on a Ruger Mini, or a 10/22 in seconds to add or remove a pistol grip feature. I don't see any of them shipping with screws that are glued in. So, yea not worried about it. For my ugly stick, it "never had a pistol grip" to begin with, so therefore I never "modified it" anyway. |

If in theory you had a ar that had a pistol grip when it was new and you put one of the thordsen's stocks on it should you epoxy the screw or leave it? |

I was at Dicks this weekend, stopped there during a fuel up on my way to a camping trip in chataguay this weekend!
Small world, I saw them also... Adirondack1/2 was with me trying out the keyboards and drums in the music store! (At 4, I think he's going to be a natural drummer) NUGENT would love that store, I need to tell him about it! |
