Why is there a bum on every corner?

Why is there a bum on every corner? ![]() From what I have observed its a combination of the trains stopping here to fuel up, the Interstate, and the luxury accommodations the city provides in their free camping area. (I have to applaud the Elko Police Department for keeping them corralled up over there!) I see bums catching the trains out on the East side of town all the time in the summer. I have talked to some of them coming through town (not the ones begging) and they know all about Elko. There were still a bunch of tents down along the river this summer too when I rode my bike around down there. The obvious answer to your question though is, "it works". If it didn't pay to sit there and beg for money people wouldn't do it. If it was uncomfortable for them or not rewarding they wouldn't be standing there. |

A couple years ago as you pull into Walmart there was a beggar and a dog. Forty-five minutes later when I left the Dog changed the beggar, apparently the first one wasn't begging hard enough. A dog is a good "prop" for the begging role. They also love any kind of military paraphernalia or handicap items like crutches or wheel chairs. A few years ago a cop friend of mine arrested two homeless guys that got in a fight over who's turn it was to use the crutches for begging. |

Years ago a bum with a dog was always at the Trop and 93/95 exit with a dog. The bum always had a pronounced limp. I saw him at Sams Town with a bucket of nickels one evening with barely a limp. At the exit the next day back comes the limp. |
