I just wanted to give those interested an update on the construction at Elm Fork Shooting range on Luna road.

The 100 yard rifle range has had a bunker added for a bullet trap.  Rounds now hitting the berm are covered with an eight foot high rail road bunker.  Construction will soon start on removing the old tubes and construct over head baffle system.

Today was construction of over head baffle system on the pistol bays.  A 3, 7, 15, and 25 yard over head baffle is in place as well as a bunker made of steel plate.  The next project is a western shoot house theme as well as the bunker.  The western shoot house you will stand shooting into a bar.  Targets will be activated as you shoot into the bar from outside.  The bunker will have a military type theme and you will shoot from a sand bagged wall at targets the jump up down range.  You will be able to shoot these with 9mm rifles or pistols.  Plate rack bays are also going in as soon as possible.

Tiger Valley will be hosting plate rack leagues as will as classes both in the evenings as well as on weekends.  The range will be lighted for night shooting when needed.

Many moons ago, i remember there used to be a 200 (maybe even 300)yd range at the far end of the place. [wishful thinking/on] Any chance of it coming back? [wishful thinking/off]

I have seen the original pictures of the place, which had a 200 yard range.  In those days you could shoot anything north, whether it hit the berm or not and you didn't have to worry.  Now less then 100 yards behind the impact berm is a sporting clay field, behind that is the golf course and behind that a high rise.  It would break the bank to have to overhead and ground baffle a range that length.  Sadly, urban sprawl has overtaken the ranges impact area and what is required now to contain all rounds is costing a fortune.

I will take some pictures of the range and the new bullet bunkers today and get them posted.

Thanks T.J., sounds great, and in our backyard to boot!

Is the calendar up to date at Tiger Valley? You have two weekends of open shoots in Oct.?? Thanks, Wayne.

I wish I could give a firm date but construction on this level is hard to forecast.  We should have the main pistol up by next weekend.  Reactionary steel is next and may take another week.  This thing will be safe and the most fun you can have with you cloths on.  I will keep everyone posted.

That was a problem at Backwoods Traps.  On the pistol bays, the overhead baffles were so low that a tall person could not see the targets.... and had to crouch down just to shoot.  The bottom of the first baffle was shot to shit all over the bottom board.... because they were obscuring the target.

Something tells me with TJ overseeing them.... they will have to be sized for a big guy.

Is bi-metal Wolf FMJ going to be allowable on the rifle ranges?
10/11/2007 4:48:31 AM EDT
[#23]
I haven't tackled the ammo issue yet.  The bottom of the baffles are 7 foot.  By my estimate you would have to be seven foot three inches for the baffles to be a problem.  For those in the MBA I'm sure we can work something out for you.  You will be able to shoot from 3 yards to over 25 in the paper bays.  Plate racks will be 12 yards out.  Hogan's alley looks like it's shaping up to be 15-18 yards away.

That's good news. I've been taking a neighbor out shooting over the past few months, and he's 7'1". Needless to say, a place like Bass Pro Shop was beyond challenging, as I watched him stoop down and contort his body as he tried to get into a comfortable shooting stance.

Steve, the guy that owns the shotgun portion of Elm Fork bought out the lady that owned the rifle and handgun portion.  From what I understand, Steve will run the day to day and public portion fo the range with pretty much the same rules as before.  Steve asked Tiger Valley to run the training, classes, and other events.  TJ has been hard at work the last several weeks redoing the berms, targets and general set up of the range.

I'm looking forward to this, I've been going to Elm Fork (shotgun and pistol/rifle) for years now, and I'm glad to hear it will have more areas that are EBR-friendly.

I remember having to call and if it was deer season, they didn't allow EBR's

Let us know when you get classes or training going, I need to get more proficient with my rifle and would love to have somewhere as close as Elm Fork to do it.

I'm calling Gibsons as soon as I can to find out what the banning of the FMJ is all about.  I love the AR-15 system, but as everyone knows it is hardly anything compared to a bonded 338mag or any of the large magnums.  I would like someone to give me some answers based in fact.  I would love to have Elm Fork FMJ friendly, but I can't argue the points if I don't know what the claims really are.  Does anyone have a contact with the management?

I've long believed its due to gun-ignorant insurance underwriters.... but whatever you find out is the reason for such silliness, please share!

Looking forward to checking the place out.... haven't been for YEARS, and its basically just down the road from me.

T.J., if you call Gibson's ask for Frank, the owner. If he is not there, just call back.No reason to talk to the son, he can care less. And yes, i know him well enough to say that.

TJ, it's got to be an insurance thing. The 3 ranges I shot at in close proximity to DFW that allowed FMJ were Gibsons, Collin County GR and APG. All in different cities and counties. Well that's my opinion anyway, keep us updated. I can't wait to shoot on your range.

Bump to ask those that have shot on the handgun range if they have the 1 shot per sec rule there. If so, will that be changing?

So no steel core ... and from what I'm reading this range will be AR friendly using SP or JHP rounds (possibly FMJs ?).

Has it been confirmed if the rifle range will have a 1 shot per second rule?

I havent been to Elm Fork in about 7 years, and it was for clay shooting. I never knew they had a rifle range. This will be very convenient as its close to work. Any additional information when its available would be great! thank you!

I cant imagine how a public range without a massive fallout area could be..... except for possibly indoor.

were they adverse to cans and SBR's before?

ETA: I read the range rules last night and got confused. It read like no pistol cal rifles on the rifle range and no rifles on the pistol range, and pellet and 22lr have a rimfire range.

I took that as no 9mm/40/45 carbines on the pistol range or rifle range. and .22 rifles also had to go to a special range.

Well I assumed we were talking about full auto-fire, when people say NFA-friendly about a range.

What public range wont allow cans or SBR's?  I haven't ever been to one... tho I suppose they could exist.

Yeah, I assumed he meant MG's also, but with some places around here you never know.

I got blasted many years ago at the range south of Denton (quail creek?) for bringing my semi-auto UZI out there.
