And it just happens to be on sale! Walmart has mobile 1 pretty damn cheap right now, about $24 per 5 quarts after tax. Bought 3 oil changes worth, thought I'd pass along the deal to my only friends

That's a damn good price and cheaper than I get it from my wholesale oil distributors.

Cool!

If they have 0W-40 , five quarts is a hundred year supply of gun oil for me

kind of along this thread, I noticed the other day in my local wal-mart that all the "next-gen" recycled oils were on clearance. I don't use that stuff, but someone may?

You're in luck

That's of course assuming you and your guns will be around for another 100 years... I believe plasma guns will be in effect by the year 2030. Ya know, like flying cars were expected to be around today in the year 1980?

Valvoline NextGen oil is actually an awesome product. I did a comparison with my Auto Tech students where I poured a sample of 10-30 white bottle Valvoline into a clear container and a sample of 10-30 NextGen. I then passed them around the class and told them to pick out the re-refined NextGen. Nearly 100% chose the wrong sample. The NextGen was noticeably cleaner in appearance. "Why" you ask? It has been run through the refinement and purifying process twice!
Just because its re-refined is no reason to be scared of it. And the best part? It is oil that (at least this time around) didn't come from the Middle East!

Mobil 1 doesn't come from the Middle East either.

Absolutely right. Years ago before oil prices got so crazy, Mobil 1 was the stuff the rich guys ran in their cars. Now, there really isn't that big of a price difference between it and regular conventional oil. Mobil 1 prices have remained (comparably) stable.

Nothing at all wrong with Mobil 1.

Or guys that REALLY pushed their cars HARD! I've always told people I know, "Never buy one of my used vehicles"

I'm hoping one of these days I can afford to fix my 96 Impala SS back up after using as a pursuit vehicle for several years

The last set of tires I had on it when I was using it as a Patrol Car lasted 10,400 miles. (275/40-17" W rated).

that is fine when new but i would like to see soap tests after 1k,2k and 3k miles.  i would like to see how it breaks down and what deposits it leaves.  some oil deposits are good actually.  if it is just a regular daily driver may be fine but i still won't trust it in any hi-pro vehicle.

i use penzoil 10w-30 and a cheap fram filter on my DD truck (270k on it so far).  my GTO on the other hand i use 0w-30 amsoil, amsoil extra-large oil filter, and it now holds a little above 16 quarts (oil cooler, larger filter, and accu-sump).  i do a soap test on that oil biannaul.

2 things about that though:
-they are only running full power for the first 1/8 or so now.  they pull, rebuilt that engine between runs, and replace all fluid between runs.  now run le mans, 24 hr daytonna, sebring, etc and that is a different story
-i really doubt that any of the fluids they are using are "stock" fluids.  most companies make race versions of everything if they sponsor someone.  hell, even RBF 600 is different betwen what i can buy and the real road race guys do

Road race stuff is cool, but not my cup of tea. Going quick and fast in a straight line is what I like. Top Fuel cars make at least 10 times the horsepower of any of those road race cars. And they change the oil between rounds not because it's gone bad, but because they have the engine down anyway AND because it is extremely diluted with fuel.

Did I mention that they make 8000+ horsepower?

your right, i have seen the stuff they take out of funny and top fuel cars and it is a mix of every fluid that was in the motor and then some.  my uncle use to race funny cars way back but still knew ppl in the circuit.  ya i know it takes still to run that sub-8 sec run and just the raw power of the cars but to me i prefer road racing.  i have ran SCCA (solo and PDX's at heartland before).  to me it is more still, move concentration, etc to run that.

What kind of Pontiacs do you have? My Dad owned a couple of GTO's back in the day...

VAMP was a local drag group that did bracket racing at KCIR before it was closed.

I have an 04 GTO (holden chassic) that i setup for road racing. the IRS (independant rear end) really make a difference on that car

I'd been to KCIR a handful of times over the years. I was sorry to hear it had closed.

I spent several years turning wrenches in a Pontiac (among several other brands) dealer, but I had left before the GTO's came back out. The LS series engines in those things are such a good engine. Tons of power potential.... I thought GM made a huge mistake closing the Pontiac brand.
