Hey, anybody speak FAL language around the St. Louis area?

Looking to buy first build second. Looking for a good FAL 'smith' for trouble shooting/repairs if necessary.

Also looking for any recommendations concerning which ones to 'look out for' and which ones will be reliable...

Thanks in advance

I would stay away from Hesse or Century, unless it's an Imbel receiver Century.  I'd be wary of Enterprise, unless you can have it checked over by someone who knows FALs. Your good to go with DSA, IMBEL, Springfield Armory, DCI, F.M.A.P, or FN.

If you want to build one, I'd be glad to help. I've helped several guys on the MOHTF put together their rifles. I'm not a gunsmith and I won't build it for you, but I'll loan you the use of my tools and give you all the guidance I can.

Lots of info in the FAL section of the armory forum here and even more at www.falfiles.com.

Thank You! Got and eye on an Argentine kit, just need to line up the receiver. Your offer makes the math work much better.

If you're doing an Argentine kit, get the Coonan (DCI) Argentine receiver.  The guys at Coonan are great to deal with.  DSA's aren't all they're cracked up to be anymore.  They're complete rifles have a bunch of crap made US parts in them now days.  Like cast lock levers and porus US bolts.

Thanks for reaffirming by guess about using the Coonan receivers.

Coonan also has a nice deal with a barreled receiver... does the Argentine kit have to built with the Argentine receiver or can the G1 receiver be used with the Argentine kit?

I'm guessing that their barreled receiver can be any receiver built onto their barrel.

This is an Argy Para kit built on an Argy F.M.A.P. receiver.  The Argentine guns all used type III receivers, so the Coonan Argy type III would look the most original.

Probably my favorite FAL.

Done deal right there. Thank you.

The Sarco/ Argy kit has something extra/different to it, I can't remember exactly what it was, but there is an extra cut made to the Coonan Argy receivers to accomidate this difference, The type ! receiver should work with some modification I believe, But like Robert says, the Argy is a type 3 gun, the type 3 Argy receiver from Coonan should go right together and match when your done.
If you really want a type 1 or 2, if it were me, I'd look for such a kit, try FAL FILES marketplace, if you are looking at the barreled receiver, you might consider a G1 kit from Apex, hope this helped.

OK, just bought this Stg-Steyr kit which will match up with either the type 1 or 2 receiver. I can get Coonan to number the receiver to match the kit numbers? The seller is going to make the kit compliant with FSE hammer, trigger, sear, pistol grip, a DSA straight pull or a Penguin hump back stock, a TAPCO charging handle, US made gas piston plus several U.S. made mag floor plates.

The barrel is Steyr marked, just not numbered to the kit.

Yes, they will do custom #s, I believe it costs an extra 35.00, I just built on their new type 2 receiver (S/A-Rhody Clone)  and it went togethr nice.

I think that's La Conservationist off the files, Super good guy to deal with, I agree with the sugestion on the wood, you only have to do it once, and it will be beautiful, Old South Gunwood, or Bluemonster, (his is Blue Monster)  You'll need 7 total US parts, if you can aviod using the DSA HTS I would at all cost, (12# trigger, premature parts failure) a piston is usually harmless, receiver is usually a given, wood furniture would give you 2-3, muzzle device, (I think DSA makes a stoll type like is on it) sounds like you have some things lined out, post the leftovers for sale, and enjoy your rifle, the STG with Steyr bbl has the best reported accuracy on FALs, I'm on the other side of the state, or I'd make the same offer Robert has.

Indeed it is LaConservationist! He's been extremely helpful.

I'll have the kit in hand sooner than the receiver. Should be pretty exciting to be so close to having my first FAL.

Plus, it will look mostly new which is way more than expected. I was willing to settle for a less finished rifle but this came together so nicely it was surprising. Getting an Stg-Steyr kit is like icing on the cupcake!

Eight week lead time for Coonan type II receivers... I'll be waiting.

Stg58 with Austrian proof marked barrel. Should be a lot of fun.
