Anyone here have any knowledge on installing a FAL front end?  I have a DSA Austrian model that I want to change over to a carbine with a new DSA front end.  At first I was going to just have the barrel cut and threaded but now I am thinking I want to also change to the short gas system.

I don't know that this is something I want to take on myself and am looking for someone in the St. Louis area, or within "reasonable" driving distance to make the swap.

Any recomendations other than C&S?

I have built a few (or several) FALs and could help you with your rifle.  I live in Montgomery City, which is about 80 miles from downtown St Louis.  I have all the FAL tools and would be glad to guide you through the process of changing your front end and headspacing your rifle.

If you would like to have it professionally done, I highly recommend Bill Franklin of Bill's Gunsmithing in Silex Mo.  Bill builds a lot of Fals.  His phone # is 573-384-6395.  I build my own FALs, but Bill has done a couple of bolt guns for me and blued a couple of FALs that I built.  His work is top-notch.

IM me if I can be of any help.

robertl is being too modest. He helped (note: did most all the work) on mine and it is absolutely perfect.

Rsteinb, glad you're still happy with the FAL!  I really need to get another project going.  I have an Inch cut Imbel receiver that is just crying to built with one of the Australian kits that is currently available.  I haven't done a thing lately, as I've had my workshop tore up adding a bathroom, and I'm just now getting everything set back up.  Between construction and shoulder surgery my gun habit has really suffered the last few months.

cbr954,
You're welcome to IM or email me anytime and I'll do anything I can to help.  I'll be out of town from June 18th to the 24rd, so maybe sometime after that.  Maybe we could get a date set up and post it on the MOHTF, might be someone else that wants to do some FAL work.  I also have everything needed to work on AR's also.
