FBI: 132 Officers Killed on Duty in 2003
Mon Nov 8,11:11 AM ET

By CURT ANDERSON, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - The FBI (news - web sites) reported Monday that 132 police officers were killed in the line of duty in 2003, with guns and traffic accidents claiming the most lives.

Of the total, which is eight deaths more than in 2002, 49 were killed in traffic accidents and 45 slain with firearms. Thirty-one of those killed with guns were wearing body armor at the time.

In all cases, the average age of the officer killed was about 37 and average level of police experience 10 years. The totals translate into one officer death every 2.8 days nationally, the FBI estimated.

Authorities solved all the cases in 2003 of officers who were shot to death or otherwise intentionally killed. Thirty-eight suspects were arrested, 14 were killed by police and six committed suicide, according to the FBI.

About half of the officers killed intentionally were making traffic stops or arrests. Ten were slain while investigating disturbance calls, and nine were ambushed.

Twenty-eight of the 52 intentional killings and 37 of the 80 accidental deaths took place in the South, by far the deadliest region.

In addition to the officer deaths, nearly 58,000 officers were assaulted in 2003 while performing official duties, with more than 16,000 suffering injuries. Eight out of 10 of these attacks involved hands, fists and feet.

The report was culled from information submitted by more than 10,000 state, local and tribal law enforcement agencies.

Let's see, what areas of the south? Let's throw the race card in there just for fun and re-run the numbers. Let's see how many of the killers were democrats and how many had illegally obtained firearms and how many had lengthy criminal backgrounds that democrat elected judges and prosecutors let walk one too many times. How many of these murders were in "blue" counties?Anyone can spin numbers. His "analysis" is shit. It doesn't mean anything, except the guy knows how to count to 80 and do some short division.

His Kung Fu is weak.

I tend to agree.  The provided data do not allow for jumping into that conclusion.  It does not say, for example, the population density where the crimes took place.   I just posted the article to show that even though some reports are boasting a reduction in crime there are more law agents dying.

However, I found interesting that so many died while wearing vests.  So this means the vests were not adequate, were not properly used or the bad guys are learning how to hit outside of the vest covered area?

Another "fact" that intrigued me was that ALL cases involving officers deaths were solved.   If general statistics say that only 60% or less of the homicides are solved, how come ALL cases involving policemen killings were solved?

Vests: most vests are handgun rated, so rifles can play a big part. If I were a pro criminal with a handgun I wouldn't get in a fair fight. It'd be over before the opponent knew it.

And traffic (vehicles) is 2% more dangerous than firearms, but firearms are restricted. Maybe we should quit letting felons drive.

I agree regarding the analysis.  I'd love to know how many of the bad guys had prior convictions.

What surprises me is how SMALL that number is.  You're talking about 132 deaths, for a HUGE demographic.

Only 49 were killed in traffic accidents.  I would bet that more delivery drivers are killed on the job every year.

Only 45 were homocides.  I would bet that more "Quickie Mart" clerks are shot down during the performance of their duties.

I am NOT discounting the lives of these officers.  I am saying that their mortality rate, considering the hazards of their job, seems surprisingly low.

I wonder what the other 36 deaths were contributed to.....choking on a DONUT.

I know

That reminds me, how many police officers does it take to push a suspect down the stairs?

None, he "fell".
