| Guys at work were talking about guns and stuff and some different info was being tossed around. Does the FFL keep serial number records when they sell a firearm and do they submit the records to State Police / ATF ? Meaning, does the government have records of firearms that we buy from FFLs ? If you buy multiple firearms at one time do you fill out seperate forms for each ? Im sure there is only one background check done. When they do the background check is the gun serial number sent in to State Police on the form ? |

We are required to keep serial number records but we only submit a form to ATF or State Police if it is a multiple handgun purchase. (more than one handgun in a 5 business day period.)
If an FFL goes out of business, the FFL must surrender all records dating back twenty years to BATFE. If you buy multiple firearms, you fill out one 4473. There are enough spaces and we can put more on the back of the form. We do not transmit the serial number to NICS. All they know is that you are puchasing either a handgun, long gun or other firearm. |

^^^^^ yep ^^^^^ additionally, in VA we submit a copy of the SP-65 to the State Police. that's the single page form you fill out that just has your physical information on it and the number & type of firearms that you purchased, i.e. pistol, rifle, shotgun. it does not have the make, model or serial numbers on it. |

The requirement to surrender records to BATF does not apply to a C&R FFL. Only to dealers, manufacturers, and importers. |

While only less than twenty year old 4473s go to BATFE, the entire bound book must be delivered (and it records everything, though in less detail then the 4473). |
