My buddy that recently got stationed here went to apply for his FPID last week. He went to the local barracks and filled out his application. Then the clerk behind the desk asked for a list of all the firearms he owned, including make, model, serial number and caliber. I thought the FPID was for firearms being purchased in NJ, not those already owned or procured while a resident of another state. What gives??

Probably trying to either trick him or trying to see if he is from somewhere else, possibly moved or something. Not sure, i never heard of that BS

that's total BS. they can't ask that question. i hope your buddy said he didn't own any firearms. if you move to NJ you are under no obligation to register any of your firearms. just hope he didn't bring any pre ban configured firearms or mags over 15 rounds with him.

I hope he told the clerk to go screw.

Basically, he did. I'm curious if there is a statute or case law that precludes the state from asking for that info. He's not a resident, he's from TN, just active military stationed here. I'm in the same boat. I realize there are loopholes that mean we don't HAVE to have a FPID, but it sure makes things easier i.e. ammo and all now. I just want to have all my ducks in a row before I go apply for mine, since I will be applying at the same barracks. Either that, or wait a few more years to move out of the PRNJ.

Highly unorthodoxed.  I thought the FPID was for firearms being purchased in NJ, not those already owned or procured while a resident of another state. That is correct What gives?? She/He is a numbnuts.

None that I know of.  If it appeared to be a regular routine question, one could contact the NJ Attorney General's Office. He's not a resident, he's from TN, just active military stationed here. Does he still have a TN DL?  He should've applied using that address. I'm in the same boat. Thanks for the info guys. I'll pass it along. PK90, thanks for reminding me about using the address on my DL, I'll have to do that when I go apply. I'm pretty sure my buddy has his TN DL as well. It's his home of record and he still has property there.

It appears they tried to get your buddy to fill out this form. Did they go into a good cop - bad cop routine too?
