I found a private seller with a Rem 1100 I'd like. He wants to do the transfer at the State Police. My question is, is this legally necessary in MD? I've only ever bought from dealers before so I honestly don't know. Do they charge for this? Is this covered by 1 gun a month? Thanks, Colonel Hurtz |

Unless there's some weird variant of the 1100 that I've never seen, there's no reason for this to go through the MSP. It is entirely legal for it to be a FTF transaction. If he's worried about you being a non-qualified purchaser, just show him a copy of a recent regulated firearms purchase form to show him you weren't "disapproved". Otherwise, tell him to keep his ol' 1100. |
No need to do this at the MSP - that firearm is not regulated so you do not need a background check or approval. I would, however, have him write up a receipt stating make, model, caliber, your info, his info, price paid and date and you are not a convicted felon, etc to make him feel better.. There are plenty of templates online for FTF firearms transactions. Long arms are neither processed by the MSP (other than so called assault weapons, which this is not) nor is it covered by the 1 gun a month law (that is for regulated weapons as well - handguns or so called assault weapons). Don't waste your time or his by going to the MSP, they will tell you the same thing. Cash and carry for non-regulated weapons. |
Sounds fine. Just proof of age and of the transfer so if need be the long gun can be accounted for. Don't worry about the id, he can't do anything with a copy of the ID because it reflects "MVA" back into the printed copy. |
I have done FTF's and sometimes sellers want a copy of my DL and sometimes they just write down my soundex number and my name and address as printed. I guess it just depends how paranoid the seller is. I agree with Killer Tux - not too much they can do with a copy of your DL, but you can always say you would rather not if you are concerned about privacy and identity theft. |

If he just wants to look at your DL to make sure you live in MD and are over 21, that's fine. They do the same at the gun store and when you enter a bar. Giving in to a demand for a photo-copy is just asking to be the victim of identity theft. Not even FFLs photocopy DLs. Tell him he can look at it, but he can't have it. |
