They have been working on some drainage system around the lake.  Perhaps the shooting range itself is not closed, but the access road leading to the range is blocked.  Did you see construction workers/heavy equipments there?  A friend also reported the same thing about a month ago.  But the range was open when I went there that weekend.  Try again tomorrow.

I hope they did not shut down the range like in 1999, when some idiots decided to shoot up the range.  They used to have a toilet by the range.  One day some jackasses decided to have a target practice using the toilet bldg as their targets.  The wall was riddled with bullet holes, some were really big (must be from slugs).  They shut down the range for 3 months and completely removed the toilet.

Hey, I was planning on heading out this afternoon also, around 2:30 or so - I'll check back here first.

Heavy rain last week washed out the road around their new "drainage work".  Supposed to be repaired in 2-3 weeks.  Range is not closed, just access to the range.

Nyghtfall is correct.  I went there with my wife, but the road is closed.  There is a large pile of earth in the middle of the road just by the drainage.  2-3 weeks?  OMG.  I did not see anybody working out there around 12:30 this afternoon .... lunch break?

BLAH!! Is there room enough to park and then hike in to shoot? I don't mind getting my feet dirty - hehehe.

I thought about that.  But it was quite a walk to the range, unless you want to go through the bushes.  And I have a lot of sh*t to bring when I go for my practice. Beta_MO .... tell me how to get to Rudolph Bennit, please?

Figured I'd let you guys know what they told me before anyone get's harassed. When the road was closed last month, a buddy and I went to the booth with the park ranger or whatever to ask if we could walk to the range to shoot, and was told, "no". The range was closed along with the road. She was polite and told us that other people has been asking that question too. But that's not to say they didn't OK it for this time though. So if any one has heard otherwise, please let me know so I can shoot something!

Heck, I forget what road that's on. I was with MetalMan and Brad. I'll find out and post later, because that's where I'll be going as well!

EDIT:

How to get there:

Rudolf Bennitt Conservation Area is 19 miles north of Columbia on Highway 63, five miles west on Route F, and 2.75 miles north on Route T.

Here's a PDF of the area:

As an excavation contractor and an avid shooter, I can sympathize with both sides.  I would guess the main reason they don't want anyone walking through there is because of liability issues.
1.  Liability for the contractor is very high, it only takes one person claiming to fall and twist their back or something and sue the company to cost that company a lot of money.
2.  Safety issue at the range, if somebody would happen to get hurt at the range, emergency vehichles would not be able to respond and assist that person.
Plus, without access, the park rangers cannot easily monitor the range.

That sucks that it's shut down for so long though.  If any of you guys, or gals want to come down to Jeff City to shoot, give me a holler and I'll show you the way to the Scrivner Conservation area, just outside Jeff City.

This is in my neck of the woods.  Take 63 north from Columbia until you get to the 22/63 exit ramp.  Get off there and go west.  This will take you on Route F.  Take Route F 8 or 10 miles until it meets Route T at a very small town called Rucker. Take route T about 5 miles and you will come to a white church and a cemetary.  The gravel road that sepreates the church and the cemetary is the road the shooting range is on. The range is 2 or 3 miles down the road.  The number of the road slips my mind at the moment. I hope that helps
