Anyone taken any classes here in Indiana? I recently took some weapons to a local martial arts studio that my son attends. The owner wanted his students to be able to recognize some of the weapons and what they can do. One of the questions was "Who or where would be a good place for training?". I really didnt know how to answer. I had a small training course when I lived in Kentucky, but that was just to get my concealed deadly weapons license. The only thing I learned from that was some of the situations of a justifiable shooting. I have been around and handled firearms for 30 years know and I have a good grasp of when and when I cannot use deadly force. But where would be a good place for a beginner in Indiana to start? Not just shooting guns, but info like when to use deadly force. Is this place any good? http://www.iftnra.com/ Anyone have any recommendations? |

Boone County Sheriff Ken Campbell. They host Gunsite, Louie Awerbuck, Pat Rogers, Bill Jeans, and Ken has an intro to defensive handgun that he puts on a few times a year.

Hard Target Firearms Training is definitely worth looking into.
Guy is a good instructor & has good prices as well. A few of us here at the Indiana forums got together & took the Basic AR15 class last year. As far as I know everyone enjoyed & benefited from the class. |

Fighting pistol and The Fight from Tactical Response should be on your list. Unfortuantely, both were just hosted in Seymour the past four days. If you carry a pistol, you need to take a scenario based force-on-force class. |

I'd love to see a handgun course specifically on the 1911. SD, accuracy, maintenance, all geared toward the 1911. Do you want half a day or full day? Are you actually willing to attend and pay a reasonable tuition (like $125 for a full day)? Do you know some others who want to do it with you? The mechanics of defensive shooting are pretty much the same for any handgun. The manual of arms is slightly different for the 1911. Do you really want a class in maintenance and cleaning, etc.? |

Full day or even 2 full days would be great. I'm a shift worker & we'd have to be available on the same date(s). Buying 45 acp ammo is a challenge, also. I have no problem paying in advance like I did with other handgun classes I attended. It would be nice to have basic self-defense instruction, marksmanship & even a detailed disassembly(I have Kimbers) all devoted to the 1911. Maybe a few shooters on this board would see value in a 1911 course like I do, sign on & get this moving. |

Sorry for the delay in response. Again, if you find some other people interested, we can do a class for you. There isn't much truly unique to the 1911 in terms of using a pistol to defend yourself, though. You're also welcome to enroll in any of our classes and we'd be glad to help you learn to use your 1911 alongside others who may be using different weapons. Private instruction is also an option.
