Hello yet again. I have two projects that I'm currently working on at the same time. One Romanian AK, and a Yugoslavian RPK. The rest of the kit parts aren't pictured. They were being worked on.

I have a few questions for those who have built AK's before.

Is the barrel on the Yugo RPK threaded or pressed?

On the rear trunion of the RPK, are there two rivets that go all the way through, or four smaller rivets that only go in partially?

What is the best method for removing the barrels on both kits?

Getting tools isn't a problem....

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I've got an immaculate one from www.ak-47.org It looks like it hasn't had a round fired through it. All of the parts are very clean, and best of all, it wasn't drowned in cosmoline.

As for the RPK, I bought it from gunbroker.

Ok. The rivets on that rpk go all the way through the rear trunnion. On top of that the receiver is spotwelded to the trunnions. The last one that I built took me 2 hours to demil and about 30 minutes to build on a NDS receiver. It is a straightforward build all the way through but you will need some specialized eqiopment for it if you want it to look good.

When demilling those rivets out just use an 11/64ths drill bit and lots of oil with a variable speed drill. GO SLOW! It should only take you one drill bit to do the entire kit if you are patient. Buy 4 bits though. After you are halfway through the rivet I would suggest trying to drive it out with a punch. This saves a lot of time and drill bit sharpness.

How does the bore look on that RPK kit?

As to the barrel removal there is a pin that goes across the trunnion that holds the entire thing in place. Drive this out and then use a BFH with a brass drift to knock the barrel out of the trunnion. Protect the end of your barrel with pennies or some such non marring substance.

Thanks man. I appreciate the help.

I can say that the bore on the RPK looks awsomely horrible. I'm still trying to mop it up with JB bore cleaning compound. I looks better, but I think I'll go through it  a few times more. If that don't help, I'll just fire it once it's completed. I've heard once you fire a few rounds through it, it helps clean it out. Once it's hot, I'll use some more JB compound.

I'll try removing the barrel on my next day off.

Also, I've decided to purchase a Jig for bending flats. I've convinced a few friends to put in for it. A spot welder is the next step. Other than that, I have most of the tools I need in order to complete a few AK's. After these two projects, and helping my friends build theirs, I was thinking about either building an AK-74, or a FAL....
