Our flag is lit and up 24/7. Proper protocol states that the flag shall be hoisted briskly to the peak of the pole and then lowered ceremoniously to half mast. If the flag is already up am I to lower it to half mast directly or do I lower it totally and then raise and lower it ceremoniously?  And at what time should I do this, midnight or sunrise?

This might help US Flag Etiquette

The last paragraph will answer your question specifically.

Well kind of not really.  If the flag is already up, as ours is 24 hrs a day. Do I simply lower it to half staff with out the raising to full staff and then lowering to half staff?

Sorry Bro,

I thought that link explained it. Maybe I missed something in the last paragraph:

The Flag in Mourning

To place the flag at half staff, hoist it to the peak for an instant and lower it to a position half way between the top and bottom of the staff. The flag is to be raised again to the peak for a moment before it is lowered. On Memorial Day the flag is displayed at half staff until noon and at full staff from noon to sunset.

Perhaps someone else on the board can be more specific.

Tried to help.

Be Safe.

Joe

He is confused because his flag is already up. So that paragraph doesnt help him.

I would just lower it and then put it back up at the right time

So he should just lower the Flag and follow the SOP from the link I posted.

Somebody help us here!

What am I missing?

Well, normally the flag would be raised at sunrise.  It would be hoisted to full-mast then immediately lowered to half.  At noon it would be raised to full and then lowered normally at sunset.  In this case, I would lower it to half-mast at sunrise and raise it to full at noon.  Memorial day is different anyway. You always raise it to full, but normally you are lowering it immediately (if displayed at half-mast) at sunset.

I lost sleep over this. I am going to just lower it to half. Thanks for the opinions.

If you guys don't mind a hijack of this thread, I had a question of my own.
I have a flag pole that sits on a mast attached to the front of my house. I know that proper etiquette requires the flag to be illuminated at nights. Being that I do not have a power source where the flag is located, I remove the flag when it starts getting dark and put it back up in the morning. I would like to keep it up 24/7.
Does anyone here fly their flag at nights without lighting? Also, would one of those solar landscape flood lights work well enough?

Thanks.

Flying the flag at night without illuminating it would be against proper etiquette. The solar power lights seem to not have enough power to light a flight properly all night long.

I know a guy and I've posted my frustration about him flying his flag here before.

His flag flies 24/7, rain or shine, with no direct illumination source. He flies his flag until it becomes a tattered rag and then he replaces it and starts the whole process again. I've tried to talk to him about proper etiquette, but he told me to mind my business. I've had to stop .Mil buddies in the past from cutting it down.

Last year a Vietnam Vet on a scooter cut his tattered flag down. The flag was so tattered, torn and dirty, the colors started to run. I bowed my head in shame when I saw that and shortly thereafter the Vet cut it down. The guy thought I had something to do with it (and I didn't), but I was glad the Vet made a statement.
