I asked this in the training forum awhile ago but I wanted to know if any locals have attended this course. I have a certificate for a 4-day course and I'm planning on taking the Practical Rifle course soon. Can you guys tell me what equipment you took with you (mag holders, scopes, etc). Also, how did you like the class?

I liked the class but I took it a while ago so it may have changed somewhat. It was good basic training that could be applied to many different scenarios. First thing is take food, they don't have a lot to eat out there. Take a wide brimmed hat and a ball cap. Their course description should tell you what you need as far as sidearm, holster ,sling, ammo pouches ect. Most guys seemed to use a single mag pouch or there pants pockets but I do remember a couple of guys using tactical vests. I used a Canadian C1 mag pouch on a regular belt. I wish I could give you some more info but that is all I can remember  for now.

Oops forgot to add, I've taken a 4-day pistol course there already. PARA-FN-FAL, Thanks for that info so far.

I've take the basic rifle class twice, and I'm going again on the 15th.

I take no equipment as such, I just wear cargo pants and I do fine. (Anyway, I experience no problems I can blame on a lack of equipment. )

This depends on the RM, of course, but I've found the rifle class to be more fun than the handgun classes. Shooting steel, things like that. You'll shoot at 400 yards once, on the 4th day. Other than that, no farther than 200, and the bulk of the shooting is 50 and in. Red dots and scopes are certainly allowed, but not necessary.

I'd take more ammo than is required (600 rounds, IIRC). They usually run drills the fourth day, after the skills test, which are a lot of fun, but do burn up the ammo.

I think the training is good, and as good as it could be given the size of the classes.

So you have one of the elusive "blue" certificates?

I've taken the practical rifle course twice and the skill builder.  I think they do a good job with it.  It is a good starting point for getting tuned in to rifle marksmanship skills, learning your zero and ballistic parabola, clearing malfunctions, and shooting positions.  Bring your rifle, sling, ammo, and one or two kydex belt mag pouches, hat, sublock, water, food, and anything you need to keep your rifle running (lube, sight tool, rod, spare bolt, etc..).

Have fun!

Since most shooting is done a 50, has anyone used an ACOG for this class? Am I going to be at a disadvantage or should I use irons for those ranges and then throw on my ACOG for distance shooting? I guess the only thing I'm missing is mag pouches.

I was able to attend FS handgun course because a friend has a lifetime membership there and he invited us to go free of charge. I have another certificate because I posted their links on myspace for 3 years. So I need to use that

When I've been there, a hefty majority of students have been using irons, but I'd say take what you want to train with. Personally I prefer to be at least competent with irons, and maybe some day I will be  If you want to take both, make sure one or the other is sighted-in well before, as you'll only have time to do one at class.

I've taken the class with an AR and with an AK, both sans optics, and next week I'm taking this:

The gray certificates are only supposed to be good for your first class ever at FS, to keep people from buying certs on fleaBay over and over, rather than buying a membership. They may overlook this for any number of reasons (such as getting you in the membership lecture again), but I'd check before making firm plans.

Very nice cacafuego. My irons are sighted in but I'm still working on the ACOG. I'm going to American Shooters today to do a 25m BZO (with the 300m post) so I can be close at 100m. I'd really like to take the class with you, that way I don't feel like I'm going alone.

Yeah I've seen those grey certificates (one of my friend has two) but mine is not one of those. It doesn't say for first time students only. It's an actual signed letter from them stating that I can take a 4 day handgun, shotgun or rifle course.

You're supposed to sign up two weeks before, but if you can get in on the 15th, I'd be happy to see you. I'm going again on the 30th, but for a handgun class.

I knew about the Web-links program, but I didn't know they had special certificates for it. I wonder just how many varieties there are.
