| They need to be apprised of the Illinois law where their pet 870's and Ithaca 37's are on the chopping block. The first time somebody is killed with a bolt action rifle with a high magnification scope the "sniper rifle" will be the new bogeyman. They need to lose their myopic view of gun ownership and join us in the fight, they're next. |

I frequently jump on people when they want to tout that we must protect the hunting guns under the 2nd. Hell I'm a hunter myself and I work in a related field but I never let them gloss over the fact that the 2nd was written with no thought to hunting rights whatsoever, hunting gun rights are merely hitch hiking along for the ride on the right to have firearms as a protection from an outside force or even sadly in the event of our own government becoming a tyrannical burden.

THIS!!! I enjoy hunting, but lately hunters have been driving me crazy! The word hunting has no business being included in a discussion of the Second Amendment and gun rights! Our founders would never have even dreamed that they would have to constitutionally protect anything having to do with hunting. FUDDS = FAIL They are our own worst enemy. |

You're absolutely right in that the 2nd Amendment was not written with hunting in mind, but don't diminish the importance/relevance of hunting either. The 9th Amendment reminds us that there are many other rights that we are endowed with, such as hunting and self-defense, that we still have despite them not being listed specifically in the Constitution; and the lack of them being mentioned elsewhere in the Constitution, such as in the 2nd Amendment, shall not be construed to mean that they don't exist. So yes, the 2nd Amendment exists as a means of enabling the people to protect their freedoms from those who would take them away, but also as a means of enabling us to exercise other rights that we hold, such as that of self-defense, recreational shooting, and hunting. |

He taught me to shoot trap and he's been a family friend for over 20 years so I give him a pass and just ignore him. But next time he brings it up, I'm going to tell him that after they get my ARs, they'll come for his guns and when they come for his .270 "sniper rifle, " I won't be there with my lever action .30-30 to defend his rights. ![]() |
