There's a ton of information and only a little time to post it, so I'll continue to edit this original post:
We will have a large metal building that can be used to sleep in, or you may pitch your tent, camper. lean-to, etc. There is fresh running water and latrines. .50BMG is a GO! to 1,500 meters and there ARE "targets of opportunity" out there. We're not going to run wild, but you will be able to see just how good you aren't. We will have quite a few different targets. To go anywhere it's ten miles or more, however traffic is minimal at its worst. You'll pass right by a gunshop coming in, there's another one ~10 miles cross lots, a stuper wal-mart, commercial motels, etc. Just like any other Post there's a busy side and a quiet side; we're on the quiet side. No need to worry about going on Post or through the gates: You can, and they are aware of what we're doing, but the routing doesn't cross Garrison.....I can see us going to eat at one of the Dining Facilities or maybe a tour of the place, but otherwise we're out in the woods. Doing a map search of "Ft. Drum" will give you an idea of the size and scope: we're on the North-East side of the installation, and most of the civilization is on the South West side (including Watertown) If you don't want to "camp" there is a new Mom & Pop motel in Carthage and quite a few in the area back towards Post & Watertown. There a few places along the way that sell wood carvings, Adirondack furniture, Arts & Crafts, antiques, etc. just have to look along the way. If you have questions (and you know you do) post them! |
|
for starters!
1. Physical address of range. 2. Arrival time on Friday afternoon for the early birds. 3. Start time of shooting/range hours. Can we drive up to the range? 4. Donation costs to cover target expenses. Should be minimal. 5. Food plans. Bring your own? Cook out on Friday? Will there be grills and/or a fire pit? |
| I asked this on the other post and didn't get an answer, any help would be appreciated. Either way I will probably be shooting this weekend as we have IWQ(Individual Weapons Qual) but heres my question again- Is there anymore openings for this? I have my final Guard drill this/that weekend and wouldn't mind stopping by after I'm finished if its not to late. What would I need to do before hand if there is still spots open? |

for starters! 1. Physical address of range. Range 25, "Tank Stationary Gunnery Range" P22470 Because the roads are not sign posted we will place a sign indicating where to turn. on a Ft. Drum map it's right off of Lewisburg Road. Rte 3 just before the Village of Natural Bridge. Nearest landmark is the Natural Bridge Cemetery and if you come to Backus road you've gone too far. There will be well placed signs and cellular communications 2. Arrival time on Friday afternoon for the early birds. We will be on-site by 1:00pm I will ask that persons coming in call so that I can make out a Range Pass for their vehicle, lest they have an encounter with the Police. 3. Start time of shooting/range hours. Can we drive up to the range? We are right on the Range; vehicles will be close enough to not make transfer a hassle 4. Donation costs to cover target expenses. Should be minimal. I haven't though this out very well, but ~$5.00 per event will keep the riff-raff out. 5. Food plans. Bring your own? Cook out on Friday? Will there be grills and/or a fire pit? I will bring a large gas grill and a fire pit. There are a few diners & restaurants, back in Carthage (you'll likely drive through there on the way) they have most of the things you'd expect in a small town (stores/food/gas/bars/etc.) Everyone should at least mildly provision themselves, but even of you don't you're not going to go hungry. |

Sorry, I must have missed your question: You are more than welcome to come out and join in! If you just want to stop by and see what's happening, that's perfectly alright too! The only stipulation is membership or joining the New York State Rifle & Pistol Association. This can be done on the spot. NYSRPA does a tremendous amount of Pro-gun work as well as training and supporting the shooting sports. NYSRPA.org |

We will have physical room for up to 50 people to sleep on cots, bring your own first come first served on cot space.
We will also have lights, running water , toilets, and room for you to park a camper or pitch a tent (NO HOOKUPS FOR CAMPERS) Meals we usually do a store run locally, pass the hat, or if you want to bring food and do pot luck that's fine too. Hoping to get the LI crew to bring up the China Box for some Cuban Roast Pig!
Now I have approximately 14 people at this point, you need to let me know if you're coming!!! |

Folks this IS a modern facility with multiple buildings, now on the down side this particular range has concrete pads for armored vehicles (read lack of benches) but it's wide open and long. I'm certain we'll be able to adapt just fine. For those interested in "Campgrounds" there are a couple in the area, one is the "1000 island/Adirondack" campground about three mile up the raod from Natural Bridge. |

All sounds good. Thanks Glenn!
I would remind shooters to bring some type of shooting mat/blanket as some shooting events will be from prone. Looks like there will be no benches, which is fine by me I would also like to have a couple 6 to 8' tables to set guns on. I have some relay/team shooting events in mind that folks will enjoy. I will be coming up with my friend Adam. I have put the word out to a few more folks. |

Glenn- What time do you plan to kick things off on Saturday morning? And what's the best way to get up there from CNY. I presume 81 to Rte. 3? We won't start shooting until after 0900, however with the exception of Lunch we'll go throughout the day. I-81 to the Black River/Ft. Drum exit (Rte 342) stay on 342 (you'll cross over Rte 11 and then Rte 283) and it dead ends on Rte 3. turn left and proceed North. It'll be ~13 miles into Carthage where 3 zig-zags, but hold the course and you'll be fine....I'm going to guess 25 miles from I-81 to Natural Bridge. If you've got a long range rifle; bring it! What other chance will you have to smack a tank at 1500 meters.

Taking the 3a cutoff will save the zig zag through Carthage and save a few minutes. It turns NE off of rt 3 before Carthage and then drops you back onto rt3 a few miles above the village. I'm wanting to go but am scheduled to work. ETA- the forecast has an outstanding window just for this shoot. Clearing up Friday morning and nice all day Saturday and into Sunday. the arfcom gods are smiling. A serious criticism I'll toss out. jFor the guys who've never been to GATM. The shoot is in just days but I haven't seen any specific shooting descriptions or suggested pack list to shoot courses of fire. (I know be flexible but a guy would need a place to start) I realize exact course of fire is a secret and part of the fun, but what the heck and how much are you supposed to bring? Not knowing is one reason I never asked for time off of work. -Ar/ak/FAL/M14 battle rifle - no doubt -long range rifle (ok, I picked that up through the reading) -shotgun?? -pistol??? suggested rounds count and type for each??? I figure you'll run some type of 3 gun or perhaps 2 gun, some long range and I really have no idea of what else. No offense, I mean this criticism to be helpful in the best of ways just short of man love thursdays. |

The past shoots have been fairly unstructured, and you can shoot what you want, in any quantity during the "plinking" sections. Folks could shoot in whatever event that captured their interest. This year is more of an exception to that as Drum requires more structure. Keep in mind GATM started with a few guys from ARKcom and the FALfiles who got together to shoot the shit, have a good meal, and then shoot in formal CMP matches. It has changed a bit over the years.
So, for the structured portions: A CMP style match is 50 rounds. I will let guys shoot pretty much anything they want, including guns with optics. This is the highest round count of any structured event. We will be starting the day running a CMP style match for any interested shooters. Other events range from 1 round to 12-20+. If you want to be involved in everything, then you should bring: Rimfire rifle, irons or scope Centerfire pistol, revolvers or semis Shotgun for "tactical" events. Bring birdshot, 7.5 or 8 shot. Precision rifle, scoped, bolt or semiauto. I have a 10 round precision match that will be sure to challenge. AR15, or any other semiauto is fine, including .308s, Garands, etc. Long range rig if you got one. Anything else you want to shoot. If you have a 30-30 levergun, a belt feed or a Barrett, bring it. Personally, I would suggest bringing at least 200 rds of centerfire pistol and rifle, at a min. More is better if you like to shoot. If you want to do some tactical shotgun, bring 100 rds of birdshot. One 6 target rolling thunder drill is 21 rounds alone. You may not shoot it all, but so what? |

Of course, even the Springers eventually get Wilson Bullet Proofs installed. |
