I graduated in December with an AS in Criminal Justice and am currently working out and trying to get into the best shape possible before applying at a couple local depts., but I need a job in the meantime. Does anyone here have any recommendations for reputable schools in Gwinnett Co. that do GA Guard Card training?

I've tried Google, but some of the places I've found seem to be a little too...umm...mall ninja-ish to me.

I don't get a good feeling about the quality of training I'd receive from someone dressed like Dog the Bounty Hunter.

When you get offered an armed security position, they send you through training. The pay is awful

I don't even know if that would be looked on as good experience for applying to departments. Have you thought about getting a jail job or something? Are you in that bad of shape that you wouldn't want to start applying?

I'm not looking for a career in security, or even a full-time job, but I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place. I have a fairly extensive background in metalworking and fabrication, but part-time/weekend jobs are rarely offered in those fields, and even if they were, once people in HR see the degree on my resume they no longer want to talk to me. They know that I'll leave as soon as I land a job in LE.

I'm in good enough shape to apply right now, but I don't want to squeak by, I want to breeze thru it. I'm not a young guy (38), and will be competing against guys almost half my age for a position so I need to be in better shape than I am now. I just need a part-time/weekend job to make a little bit cash while I'm working on it.

You can't get the armed guard card unless you work for a licensed security company, and they are responsible for the training.  Once you have it, it can transfer to employment with a new company, but I'm not aware of any options for getting the training without it being through a security company and having it considered "valid".

It doesn't have to be an armed position, unarmed is fine. The state still requires a guard card for unarmed security.

OK, that is a new requirement, less than five years old.

They certainly didn't when I worked security back in the '90's, only card required was to carry a weapon (with three different categorizations, uniform carry of a handgun, shotgun, and concealed carry as a detective, I only had the uniform carry classification, which at the time was limited to a .38 revolver with 4" barrel).

I'm currently getting myself in shape for a PFT with a local PD as well. A friend of mine applied to the same PD over the summer and told me, much to his disappointment, that the people conducting the test didn't much care if you ran the mile and half in 14 minutes or 9 minutes, as long as you made the cut off you were fine. My friend was a former Marine and breezed through the PFT, but he said during the hiring process it didn't matter how well he did. Not sure if this applies to all departments, but it's something to consider. That being said I understand your concern and I feel the same way you do. Hope everything goes well and good luck!
