I may be relocating to Albany, NY within the next year.
What guns can I move up there? Will I be able to get a CCW Permit? What restrictions do I need to be aware of? (links to any knowledge base would be great) I'm used to being pretty unrestricted down here in GA as to what I can own, including FA, shall issue CCW permits and "hi-cap" standard capacity magazines. Thanks! |

Thanks! Here is the low down. They have their own AWB. If you have a post ban receiver you must comply with post ban rules. No bayonet lug, collapsible stock, folding stock, Flash hiders (compensators ok), and any muzzle devices need to be perm attached by pinning or welding. If you have a PREBAN receiver none of that bullshit applies. No post ban high cap magazines, pre ban high caps are ok. You can have preban mags on a post ban receiver. NFA is a big no. No supressors, FA, or SBR's. Also any gun on the ban list is a no go. As far as semi auto pistols im not sure but if its anything like NJ, the weapon cannot exceed 50oz or its illegal. Therefor no regular AR pistols, AK pistols etc etc. CORRECT ME IF IM WRONG NY GUYS As far as CCW goes, youll have to wait for another response, but im pretty sure it goes by country, but im not 100% Make sure you read all of this HERE And just a warning to you if you happen to pass through NJ with your rifles, legal or not, do yourself a favor, turn away and go AROUND NJ. I suggest passing through PA |

There are still some shall issue counties but you can forget about it in Albany. I hear you have to have a letter from the mayor to carry there, even if you already have a CCW. Wait time for a pistol permit is 3-6+ months and there is no open carry. edit: I hope you are tripling your salary for a move to this nanny state. |

I'm not moving because of work, but because of my fiance. She's from NJ and her parents and brother's family live in Albany. She has Lupus and the humidity and heat of Georgia is physically making her sick, thus she cannot stay down here like was planned. This is so not good news......I am now forced to choose between my personal freedom/beliefs or my fiance. This sucks ass! Thank you all for the info. |

Vermont isn't far away from Albany. Just sayin'. + 100 here! You can live in VERMONT within an hour of Albany and not have to deal with our Bullshit laws! Albany city limits has a BAN on all Evil black Rifles, so you'd probably end up living outside the city of Albany anyway! |

Guys, STOP trying to convince this guy NOT to move here. We need all the good folks we can get in this shitty state! I think I speak for alot of folks when I say fuck that. I would never advise anyone to move to N.Y. I love New York State but I fucking despise the state of New York. The only thing that would improve NY is if we cut off the welfare to drive the urban dwellers to other states. Which aint gonna happen. So FUCK YOU NEW YORK I am moving jsut as soon as finances allow. |

Let me be the first to say Welcome!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And best of luck to you and your fiance.
As stated earlier, Vermont is pretty close to Albany and has a remarkable lack gun laws. On a personal note there are several things to actually like about New York. Great hunting and fishing. Deer aplenty and not those little wimpy southern deer either. But great big whitetails. The scenery in the area is spectacular. Get to like winter sports and you will be in heaven. IF you like the water everything for small ponds to the ocean with Lake Ontario thrown in for good measure. You will also never miss the months of heat and humidity that plagues the south. No fire ants, copperheads or cottonmouths either. You also haven't lived until you experience the awesome power of a good old fashioned Nor'easter. The area also drips history. Kind of funny going to Grapevine, Texas and seeing an historical marker denoting its oldest building and reading that it was built in 1913! Visit the Fingerlakes region in the fall and tour tons of local winery's. Check out the Thousand Islands area too. Mile for mile New York is on of the most beautiful states in the country. Plus Albany is only three hours from Montreal. You can easily travel to the rest of New England and even take a train for a day in New York City.
Yes the gun laws suck, but there is also much to like about this state. |

Yes the gun laws suck, but there is also much to like about this state. I agree with all of this, but the gun laws ARE going to do nothing but get worse. We have to be honest about that. It is just a basic demographic issue. For every gun guy looking to move to the state there are probably 3 more who have had it. Oh, the most important thing, even if all the freedom lovers stay and more come we still can not hold a candle to the overwhelming libtard demographic. There is a really good reason why most Republican pres. candidates don't even waste there campaign dollars here, it is a lost cause and they know it. We may as well admit it too. |

We must remember that New York was the only colony not to vote for independence from the British. New York also had more loyalists than all the other colonies combined. So historically New York has been for the power of the Crown (aka NYS Senate) over the People.

Thanks for the info, warnings and suggestions.
Question: I looked at the NYS Firearms PDF, so, I not only have to register each of my handguns, but also get a permit for each one to possess in my home? There's no multi-handgun permit? This sounds like a lot of expensive form fees..... Looks like I'll have to keep my M4 down here with family. I sold my prebans after the ban expired and built a no-ban. What about shotguns? I have a Mossberg 500 Tactical (18" bbl, 5+1, with an M4 tele-stock and pistol grip). Is there any kind of limit on ammo? I have alot of ammo too. I'm trying hard to talk her into VT....but she wants to be close to her aging parents and brother's kids....I may be stuck going to Albany. Thanks for all the help! |

Question: I looked at the NYS Firearms PDF, so, I not only have to register each of my handguns, but also get a permit for each one to possess in my home? There's no multi-handgun permit? This sounds like a lot of expensive form fees..... It is expensive on the first go around, but all of the handguns can eventually go on one permit. You will have to leave them out of state when you first come here. As soon as you are settled go and apply for a NYS pistol permit. It will take a while and will be expensive (time and exact cost varies by county). Once the permit is approved you can have your handguns shipped to an FFL in NYS and then get them on the permit. Don't bring them with you. After that, if you buy anything new, you will have to get something (varies by county again) to add them to the permit. For example, where I am in Erie County there is about a $5 fee to add new pistols to the permit. There is only one 'permit' though and it covers the registration and possession. Looks like I'll have to keep my M4 down here with family. I sold my prebans after the ban expired and built a no-ban. Yup, unless you neuter them you will have to keep them there. What about shotguns? I have a Mossberg 500 Tactical (18" bbl, 5+1, with an M4 tele-stock and pistol grip). The shotty can come. If you have a semi-auto shotgun then you will run into restrictions. The pumps are less of an issue. Is there any kind of limit on ammo? I have alot of ammo too. Not that I know of, at least not in state law. There may be some locality issues. I'm trying hard to talk her into VT....but she wants to be close to her aging parents and brother's kids....I may be stuck going to Albany. Keep trying, VT is really not that far from Albany. Thanks for all the help! Good luck. Disclaimer: I am not a lawyer and these answers reflect my understanding of NYS law, there may be some local particulars you should check out. |
