WTF!  GA Tech lost to Middle Tennessee!!  They didn't just lose either, they lost 49-28 AT HOME!!

I'm not a football expert or anything like that, so anybody can feel free to enlighten me, but given Paul Johnson's record at Tech, how much longer till he gets fired and Tech gives up on the option offense?

Of course, winning is the most important thing, but I just cannot watch a team that utilizes an option offense to the extent GT does.  It is just not entertaining at all.

To each his own- I'd rather watch a Georgia Tech, or Navy, or Army any day over the Spread crap that passes for football these days.  May as well be flag football IMHO.  But yeah, WTF?  I missed the game, had my own to coach, what the hell happened?
And, I hate to say it, the Dawgs are looking pretty good this year. Woof.

Two questions I have been asking for two years.

It's not entertaining nor is it winning football these days, especially if you are trying to play catch-up.

Why is everyone bitching about Tech's offensive scheme....its the defense that gave up 40+ points!

But the offense could only score 28 on Middle Tennessee.

I'm a die hard Tech fan...  got the diploma on the wall to show it.  I enjoyed CPJ the first and second year when they scored enough to make up for the crap defense.  I've lost that.  I just don't think we have the athletes.  Sure we get a few that develop into good players here and there, but we need some that start as good players.  I thought so last year... but it is time to make a change.  I would like to hear that Al Groh is no longer at Tech tomorrow.  I don't think CPJ will be fired this year but I wouldn't mind hearing that.  We can't recruit!  We can't even beat Middle Tennessee State.  Pathetic.
Clemson has to be just thrilled about next week.  Even though UGAs defense didn't look at that hot today.. they should wipe the field with us in Nov.  (I've got that diploma too... but it is still rolled up in the tube that it got mailed to my house in).  I'm fine with UGA all but that one day in Nov.  Heck they should have a better team each year.  I am not looking forward to next week or the game in Athens.
Time for some changes on the coaching end.

When your offense is almost incapable of getting a first down, it puts a lot of pressure and fatigue on the defense.  Thats not the whole excuse, but its certainly a part of it.

I had the same thoughts after seeing the results of the game.

For the record I have not been impressed with PJ since he got here

i have been saying this to the North Ave. Trade School fans since johnson got there. This offense WILL NOT work in division 1. The other defenses are too fast. the second thing is, what happens when a team shuts down the run? there is nothing to fall back on. You will never be able to recruit an elite quarterback, or even a half way decent QB that can throw the ball to make up for when a team shuts down the run. On top of it all the lack of defense doesn't help PJ's cause either.

GO DAWGS!

Plus you will not be able to get a good receivers to go there without a good QB.

Yeah, I know all about CJ, but he was the exception.

My friend's son is being recruited by some decent D1 schools. He was invited to talk with Tech. They told him that they don't utilize tight ends, so he would have to move to another position. The absurdity of that stance drives me nuts.

I did not go to Tech (I went to Ohio University), but have season tickets, due to my in-laws connection with the school. I thoroughly enjoy going to the games and my kids love the game day experience. However, I can't sit through another season of this shit. I took the whole crew to lunch at the Varsity, yesterday, in the 3rd quarter. I had to leave, before I busted a blood vessel. To get manhandled by MTSU is an embarassment.

GT can have a top 25 team every year, but it won't happen without real recruiting, real coaching, and a real offensive scheme.

The Sun Belt is no joke- every year they kill a couple giants.

This year alone-
Louisiana-Monroe beat Arkansas, took Auburn to OT, and scared the shit out of Baylor
Western Kentucky beat Kentucky
Middle Tennessee beat Georgia Tech
Troy took Mississippi State to the wire
....be sure to watch Middle Tennessee versus #21 Mississippi State on October 20th.

This, of course, is no excuse for GT's crappy play yesterday.  I've not been a fan of the "triple" option since day one; I argue that the third option is to throw the ball.  We have a double option, and everyone has learned how to defend it.  We don't have the athletes to build a crushing defense because they can't pass our classes.  The problem now is, even if we replace CPJ and bring in a "normal" system, the recruiting for the next 5 years is all jacked up because we were recruiting all running backs.

I really miss the "good" old days with George O'Leary and Ralph Friedgen.

As a Tech grad I can safely say our program is a dumpster fire.  It has as much to do with the school's policies as it does with the coaching.

I was at the game with my Dad and the GT defense missed at least 25 tackles yesterday.
The players seemed to lack energy and enthusiasm.
Tech's coaches, both defensive and offensive, were out schemed by the MTSU staff.

The last couple of seasons the players seems to be less responsive to CPJ's coaching style.
During a post game interview, he sounded confounded by the lack of enthusiasm of his players.
IMO, he sound tired and whiny while blaming the players for the poor performance by all on Saturday.
It's his team and he needs to figure out how to unfuck it and quickly.

Running CPJ's offense will always limit the types of players that Tech will be able to attract so I figure Tech will give at least one more year.
If they let him go it's going to take 3-4 years to rebuild the program with enough quality players to run a traditional offense and be a competitive program.

He and Demaryius Thomas were recruited by the Chan Gailey administration.  We'll never see receivers like that again with CPJ at the helm.

I think you are on to something here.  The first couple of years of the CPJ era were a great success, for a few reasons:
1. The new system was fun to the players recruited by Chan Gailey and used to playing in a pro-style offense.
2. The FBS as a whole was caught off-guard by the option system- they hadn't defended against it on a regular basis since the early 1990s.
3. 1 + 2 = wins.

After those first two years, the luster has worn off, for two similar but opposite reasons:
1. The rest of college football dusted off their 1930-1995 defensive playbooks and figured out how to stop the option.  LSU provided the rest of the FBS the blueprint for success in the 2008 Chick-fil-a Peach Bowl.  The "defending against an offense without a ball" concept was heavily publicized.
2. Losing (and having no chance at comeback wins) has drained the players.

Furthermore, the option should attract the best running backs in the nation to Georgia Tech (as it did at Nebraska in the 1980s and 1990s)- but they are going elsewhere.  That is very telling to me.

The short-term solution would be a quarterback that is primarily a throwing quarterback, but can execute the option as needed. The long-term solution, as much as I hate to say it, is replacing CPJ and bringing in a new coach with a new, proven system.  I can only imagine what could have been, had it been GT that wooed Urban Meyer instead of OSU.

I love my Yellow Jackets.  I don't like the direction of our football program.

Epic post.

I'm an alumni, class of 86.  I remember the lean years when they usually win less than 4 games a season.  The only player on the team that was there the same time I was that ever made the big time was Ken Whisenhunt.  He is the head coach of the Arizona NFL team.

I was on the five year plan also.  Much ass busted here as well.  Worked after classes to pay for it all along the way.  I went to every home game except the UGA ones (always done a family Thanksgiving).  Nothing wrong with going for the education AND enjoying the sports along the way.  Let's be honest...  everyone knows Tech for their academics... but the sports, especially football, sure do bring a lot of attention to colleges.  Heck I'm as nerdy as the best of them deep down inside, but cheering on the team even when they suck is part of the deal.

You're kidding right?? Years ago Stephon Marbury referred to Ga Tech as Georgia Tech University on TV. Actually several of their players have. It's very funny when these "intellectually superior" players can't even get the name of their school correct.

So FYI, UGA (and other) fans constantly poke fun of that incident by referring to it as "GTU". Most of you guys know enough about the history of your team and rivalry to know when another fan says "GTU", they are making fun of tech and their players.

Except for yourself, I have never heard anybody refer to Tech as "GTU."

Useless trivia (please correct me if I'm wrong too), there are four schools in Division I football that do not have the work "college" or "university" in their name.  One of them is Tech, what are the other three?

Army-US Military Academy
Navy-US Naval Academy
Air Force-US Air Force Academy
VMI-Virginia Military Institute

Is VMI Division I?  When college football when to that whole FBS/FCS system I guess it became Division I.  I'll update my trivia question.

Yeah, it used to be 1A and 1AA or something like that and VMI is FCS, but Div 1 is Div 1.

If you just ask the question as FBS rather than Div. I, you could replace VMI with Boston College and keep it at 5 total.

FWIW, I'm absolutely positive that Tech alumni know that they attended a university!

Nope, it was an institution, I was paroled in 1994 :-)

Don't fret GTU fans, there is good and bad news from last Saturday's game. The bad news is you guys lost to middle Tennessee, the good news is that there were only about 25,000 people there to see it.

That's probably because you don't hang around UGA fans too much. I hear and see it all the time. It's not trivia, it was a classic mistake made by someone that should have known better. You knew it was wrong and cared enough to correct me so I would have thought it was more than trivia. A bunch of GTU players have done it, not just marbury.

I didn't correct you.  I stated a fact.  It is a fact that other than you, I have never heard anybody refer to Tech as "GTU."  Doesn't mean you were wrong and that players such as Marbury have not incorrectly done so.

And you are correct, I don't hang out with UGA fans too much.

i thought of GTU football this past morning. When I woke up, I really had to piss, that yellowish tint I saw just had a ring to it that reminded me of the color sportd by north avenue. Riding Marta to my next destination , seeing the transvestite sitting next to me and those hookers on the street corner just brought back memories of the Michigan homeland as I went through GTU territory. Smell that smog....ahhhhhhhhhhh

Yeah Dawger... I think you have the GTU thing locked between a few of you.  I grew up a UGA fan before I went to Tech.  Never did I hear GTU.  Most of my friends are UGA fans (many are alumni).  Never heard one of them refer to it as GTU and they like to trash talk.  Attended UGA for my Masters degree.  All of the classmates knew I was Tech grad.  Still never heard the GTU thing.  I've been around UGA fans all my life and we talk football and rivalry a lot.  GTU... never heard it until this thread.  But good try.
Heck the only thing I did realize was that I never had to study getting my Masters.  Talk about easy classes!  Heck I didn't even attend a good chunk of them.

In any case.. back to football.

I keep checking the GT news hoping to see that CAG has been relieved of duty, and wouldn't be too upset to see that CPJ had as well.  Haven't yet got that.  This weekend against Clemson could be brutal.  The only good thing there is that their defense seems to suck as bad as ours.  I see Tech losing 3 more games.  Clemson, UGA, and pick another.  Then if we get invited to a crappy Frigidaire Ice Bowl type of game we'll lose it too.  As a fan... I'm pretty much fed up with the lack of coaching.  I don't expect Tech to be a national championship contender very often (ironically they've got twice as many NC titles as UGA) but seeing some progress to being a standout in the conference, or just the division, on a consistent basis would be nice.  Time for a some change in the leadership.  Losing to MTS was just pathetic.
