I had two firearms stolen when a bolted down safe was removed from my house in Dec. 2007. DeKalb PD recovered one of the firearms in June 2008. At the time, they said that it would be 6-8 months to get the firearm back from GBI. I called today to check on the status. DeKalb PD indicated that the firearm was still in their possession and should be heading to GBI soon. I probably won't see this firearm until 2010.
I'm surprised they bother with the checks if it takes that long. |

Damn! Hope you get your gun back, although it's not looking promising. Seems like moving a safe would take awhile. How big of a safe was it? It was a 1.5 cu ft gardall safe that weighed 150# and had a 3" lag bolt to a wood joist. Our alarm was bypassed and the floor was damaged to remove it. No one knew about the safe and the assholes got lucky. They moved our TV but dropped it once they found the safe. Luckily, I only had 2 primary weapons and some unused checks in it. The safe was broken into within hours since they thieves tried to cash some checks within hours. A local credit union had one of the guys on camera but the charges were dropped because he said that someone gave him a check to cash. I honestly don't care about the gun as long as it is off the street but it sucks that DeKalb/GBI take their fucking time. I learned my lesson. Hide the safe well and make sure that it is bolted down to concrete. |
| It doesn't matter how good the safe is if you can remove it from the anchor location. I can break into just about any safe in a few minutes with a torch or plasma cutter. I couldn't easily get to the anchor location and I figured that a 3" lag screw would be enough. It obviously was not. I have more confidence in concrete anchors but wood sucks for anchorage unless you can get under the safe and properly reinforce with steel plates. |
