Do gun free school zones apply to my property? I want to wake up early and open carry cut my lawn tomorrow before the rain. This would be to exercise my rights to now open carry on a vehicle (my riding lawn mower) not to bait the police. I doubt I will have any police contact. However I want to be 100% sure I am on the up and up. I believe any carry on your property is ok, GFSZ or not.
Thanks Bill |

Who are you showing off to? I read and re-read the OP's post, nowhere did it say he wants to show off that I could see. He just wants to carry a firearm, which is legal. If you are uncomfortable with people carrying please do not trample on the people who are. |

Thanks Bill So you live close to a school and want to operate a motorized vehicle while have a uncased firearm on you? Your on a motorized vehicle same as a 4 wheeler. Why don't you think that the police will be called? You are next to a school. There has been to many school shootings for this to even sound like a good idea. |

I am not across the street from a school nor even in eye sight of it. It is around 850 feet from my home, I know it is just under 2/10 of a mile away and 1/10th of a mile is around 528 feet. I appreciate the positive responses to my post. I did mow my lawn and have zero problems.
Prior to cutting the lawn I did find a statement from the DoJ from a while back stating that any carry on private property that falls in a GFSZ is ok. |

Then I asked him a question. Then I gave my opinion on it if he was in front of a school. That makes me a troll? He answered my question it would be fine for where he is, except he would be on a motorized vehicle. You can't drive your 4 wheeler into the woods loaded and out of a case can you? Now I'm giving my opinion again. If people would open carry on their property in front schools we might not have the "right" for long. "Why do you need to open carry anywhere when you can conceal carry!" Would be the reason that we would get. Not trying to troll at all. |

It appeared that you answered it incorrectly. A motorized vehicle is no different than a bicycle or a wagon when it comes to a loaded firearm. As of yesterday you are no longer forced to have a handgun in a case or unloaded. You are free to carry a holstered loaded handgun on your ATV, riding lawnmower, car, truck, etc with no permit. On your property you may conceal your handgun whether or not you are in or on a vehicle. Once you hit the street, it may not be concealed. Dressing light on a riding lawnmower it is more comfortable to carry a handgun openly. I have no problem with firearms being carried openly by responsible adults in a school zone. Too bad if hyper-sensitive soccer moms do not like it. I will Open Carry with my permit a fair share of the time especially in the summer when dressing light. |

Thanks didn't know that. I also don't have a problem with it, so far as if someone does it it doesn't affect me in a negative way like some stupid new law. |

What is considered legal is not always right. To me it is asking for attention, and potential disruption. When I am parked next to an LEO type, I do not make it a point to rev my engine on my Dodge Charger as we wait at the light. But if you have the time, go for it! I am not a big fan of openly advertising my inventory to zombies(Uneducated, undesirable, or just plain bad people) Hats off to those who have the intestinal fortitude to exercise those rights, but for me it simple comes down to time management concerns. Having to explain my actions to some eager beaver newbie with a badge, or any of the asshats with attitude that work for the State Patrol simple make it impractical to exercise in many situations. |

I still believe this is a carry over from the DNR with their desire not to have guys hunting from trucks. ie. driving around with a loaded rifle and jumping out, running just far enough from the road and opening up on deer. |

You can do that now with an unloaded rifle in a case. Road Hunting is alive and well.. The DNR actually endorsed the last bill which proposed allowing unloaded rifles on a "vehicle" but the legislature argued over it until it died. |

And none of that matters as he can carry on his own land even if it's within a school zone.

New related question. Reading some of the info on carry with a permit –– it talks about school buildings and athletic fields and such being prohibited. What is the deal on the parking lot angle –– as parking lots are otherwise dealt with in the law. Obviously I wouldn't carry in the school, on the playground or anything similar. But if you are driving to/from work and picking up/dropping off your kids at school, driving in the parking lot, not getting out of the car –– or if going in the school, putting in the trunk (which if I had to do that I would probably do not on school grounds or LOTS just to avoid potential issues with kids saying something)? My normal response is "concealed is concealed" but you know damn well getting the police called while you are anywhere around that school is going to be a major issue whether it should be or not. |

You cannot carry on school grounds, even in the parking lot. If you drive onto school property it has to be in the trunk, unloaded, and encased. If you are a licensee it must only be unloaded and encased. It does not have to be in the trunk. WI Statutes do not even require a non-licensee to have it in the trunk but Federal Law dictates that it must be in a locked container. (2) POSSESSION OF FIREARM IN SCHOOL ZONE.
(b) Paragraph (a) does not apply to the possession of a firearm by any of the following: 3. That is not loaded and is: a. Encased; or b. In a locked firearms rack that is on a motor vehicle; |

In a locked firearms rack that is on a motor vehicle; That is a big distinction. Still sucks but makes it more manageable. I could deal with starting the drive from home putting the unloaded gun in a console vault or another locked container up front for example. Drop off kids. Without getting out of vehicle, have access to gun or can do a quick pull over and re-arm without having to get out of the vehicle and do so at the trunk. Far from perfect but better. |
