This is a good series and worth watching.  It's a little slow and flat, but tells a good story and keeps you interested.
I saw it last year with the help of the interweb

It was a really great mini-series, just make sure that whatever source you are watching it from is showing it unedited, otherwise you will never get an accurate feel for the entire experience they were attempting to portray.  HBO aired some supporting materials to promote it, including a round table with the Rolling Stone reporter that wrote it and all of the main enlisted and NCO characters portrayed in it, including the one guy that is actually in the series playing himself (Rudy is his first name I think; he's the muscular guy from San Francisco that is kind of offbeat).  It was really good to get some of the back story on the episodes and I have yet to hear anyone (including the guys it is about) complain that it was not 100% accurate.

I think the story behind the Colonel and his voice was something about him having had throat cancer.  Supposedly the real counterpart actually spoke in that manner.

On a related note, have any programs of this type been done regarding troops from the U.K.?  Any good documentaries recently?  A while back someone posted a few that ran in the "Undercover" series and I was really impressed by how good they were.  I find it fascinating to see troops from our allies in action and am thankful for their service and sacrifices.

There's a good series of documenting the acitvities of British Troops in Afghanistan called "Ross Kemp in Afghanistan"

Ross Kemp used to play the part of a hard man in a soap opera over here for years....never watched it cos it was crap. But he has now taken the part out troops are playing in Afghanistan to heart after being embedded with British front line troops for part of last year.

It's an excellent series, and he has done a new series which is just starting over here called "Return to Afghanistan". Loads of respect to him for raising the profile among the British sheeple of what our troops are up against.

Well worth a look from the Biritsh side.

I think the series is available on DVD but not sure if you can get it  for Region 1.

Thanks Muddy

I hope they fight better than they read maps. What's a Scottish regiment doing based in Canterbury?

Would you live in Scotland in winter??

Sounds like a fine plan to me....migrate south for a warmer climate. I'm considering it myself.

Either way.....Good luck to them.  Looking forward to the series.

Thanks much Agent Funky.  I'll start taking a look for them.  My DVD play is region free and does PAL to NTSC conversions so I can pretty much watch anything from anywhere.  With the exchange rate right now I have been doing my share of ordering from Amazon.co.uk, LOL.

The thing I have really enjoyed about the UK military documentaries I have seen is that not only is there plenty of live footage but they don't pull any punches on censoring out the unpleasent side of war.  What you see is what you get.  My cousin is in the Sandbox South right now but coming back home for a bit soon and really looking forward to it after almost two years there.  Regardless of which flag these guys are fighting under I still appreciate and honour their service.  I can still remember, as a small child, watching the broadcasts on my side of the pond of the British fleet leaving to go to the Falklands.  That was such an emotional and proud moment for the free world.  For that along I will forever be impressed.  I just wish we still had the same sensibilities today has folks had back then.
