My M&P15 Tac is AWB compliant. I'm planning to send it out to ADCO to get the barrel threaded and perm attach a GoGun Talon Brake.
My question is: Through NYS Law, since it's perm attached, can I ask them to chop the barrel down so it'll still measure 16'' with the brake on it? I know it's on the heavy side for brakes (at 6.5oz from what I've read) so I figured I'd save some weight by chopping the barrel down too. Also, it's 2.9'' long, so if I don't chop the barrel, my 16'' becomes nearly 19''. Secondly, is there any reason why I would not want to chop the barrel? I'll effectively have a 13.5'' barrel. Will this have any significant negative affect on muzzle velocity, accuracy etc? Has anyone reading this used the GoGun Talon Brake? If so, what are your thoughts? I've done a little research and it seems pretty nice. I'm mainly looking for faster, accurate follow up shots. I don't care about sound. My second choice would be the JP Recoil Eliminator, but it's so damn ugly, or maybe a Miculek. Any other brake recommendations would be cool too (for under $100). Thank you for your time. ~Mike~ |

If you don't mind me asking, what are they getting for doing the work? I'm in process of doing one for a guy right now and don't really know what to charge. If you'd rather not say or want to e-mail me thats alright. Thanks, Chuck Sent you an email with ADCOs shop services link. Hope it helped. I've decided not to get the GoGun Talon Brake. After some more research I've decided to purchase the SJC Titan. Just ordered one online. Can't wait to get it. EDIT: I ordered a crush washer too. But since it's being perm attached, are they necessary? I think my noob might be showing. It was only $3 so I figured I should just get one incase... |

Mine is on a postban. So any muzzle device has to be permanently installed regardless of length of barrell. So I figured once it goes on it is on for good. I might as well go with the shortest barrell possible. I like the compactness of the rifle. +1 for compactness The brake I got is over 3'' long. I want the gun to remain compact at 16", if I don't chop the barrel it becomes a 19'' I already own a separate 20'' AR. |

what is the facination with a short barrel? in NY if we can't have a SBR why would we want a 14.5" with perm pinned rather than a 16" that we can change if we want? (pre-ban that is) that's why I'm an AK man, barrel length...it is what it is. If its not preban then you have to perm attach it. If you are welding the thing into place why not get the shortest avalible for a carbine. If you want more velocity get a 20 inch barrel. |

Are those $100-150 dollar brakes that much better?
As mentioned, .223 doesn't have much recoil. I have the Rock River Arms military-style brake on it and it seems to work pretty well. I like that it looks fairly similar to an A2 style brake as well. The 5.45x39 on an AK with the standard 74 brake seems pretty similar too. I can notice a little more recoil than a 14.5" barreled AR with the standard A2 FH. http://www.rockriverarms.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=category.display&category_id=276 Come to think of it, I have a spare Bushmaster 14.5" heavy barrel with a permanently attached AK-style brake. Bought it off a member in the EE years ago and never used it. |

If the shit ever got to the point where I needed a SBR, the law would be a moot point anyways.
