Basically, a sizable group of us were planning on exploring ghost towns, abandoned buildings, et cetera. This is the last group of people I would want to go exploring a ghost town with.........No Mrs. Yoss...we don't know what happened to him  ...he said he was gonna go look down the old mine shaft...that was the last we saw of him ....Oh yeah...before we left he said if anything happened we could have all his guns and ammo ...So what's the combo to that safe

| Definetly still up for it. Doing a new Jeep build now, should be ready by July/August. Just in time for the higher elevation trails to be clear. There was still a few FEET of snow well before Kite lake outside of Alma (Fairplay, 285/Hwy. 9) when I was that way last month. Did you have a place/time you were trying to set up? |

| I don't know that it's a ghost town, strictly speaking, but if you go up Halfmoon creek between Mts Elbert and Massive near Leadville, and keep bearing south and west, you'll wind up in a high bowl with a very large old mine building, several stories tall, and a tram running across to the far side of the bowl. I haven't been up there in years, who knows if the tram cables are still hanging? (they used to be, with the tram towers leaning like drunks). It's a cool place. |

In the Leadville area, you can also go east of town and check out the historical mining district. You can 4WD up Mosquito Pass too; I'm not sure if it's open all the way to Alma anymore. Lots of stuff to see on the Alma side of the pass too, of course, if you drive up the east side. Mosquito is the highest pass in the USA, higher than most mountains. Helluva view from the top.
Addendum: Yes, Mosquito Pass appears to be open all the way, after the snow melts: http://www.colomar.com/ColoradoPlaces/mosquito_pass.html I hiked and skiied all over the Leadville side of the pass and range back in my younger days. |

I'm reviving this old thread because I just came across a good website that lists a bunch of Colorado jeep trails, many of which lead to ghost towns.
TrailDamage Have fun clicking around the map of Colorado looking at different trails. Many of the trails around I-70 lead to old ghost towns. This site also lists the off-road difficulty of each trail so you can plan your trip based around what type of vehicle you have. |
